Newcomers Summer Enrichment

Secondary Newcomers Summer Enrichment ProgramThe Secondary Newcomer Summer Enrichment Program targets new English as a Second Language Students arriving to McKinney ISD from numerous backgrounds and countries. The new students may know little English, and understand few, if any, of the classroom norms that other students take for granted. The MISD Secondary Newcomer Summer Enrichment Program aims to ease this transition by teaching students basic English and introducing them to school structure in a gradual, supportive way over the summer before classes begin. Students focus on academic vocabulary and language acquisition, Mathematics, and Technology throughout the day with content area teachers. The Title III program, however, serves as much more than that: it warmly welcomes the young students into their new country, gives them chances to make new friends, and connects them with adult mentors who truly care about their success. This program services students by invitation only.
