McKinney, Texas –  McKinney ISD has hired Judy Vega as its new elementary English, language arts and reading (ELAR) curriculum coordinator. She comes to the district from Lewisville ISD and brings to her new role 18 years of experience as an elementary teacher, instructional specialist and bilingual/ESL coordinator.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the McKinney ISD family,” said Vega. “I look forward to working with all stakeholders in the years to come, and I am deeply grateful to the board and the curriculum and instruction team for this opportunity.”

Vega began her career in 1999 as a 1st and 3rd grade bilingual teacher in Dallas ISD. She spent the next 14 years in Irving ISD as a teacher and instructional specialist before moving to Lewisville ISD to serve as a bilingual/ESL coordinator.

Melanie Magee, MISD senior director of curriculum and instruction, was pleased with the addition of Vega and cited her depth of expertise and background working with bilingual students as particular strengths.

“We’re excited to have Judy join our curriculum team because she has a wealth of experience in English, language arts and reading,” Magee said. “But, she also brings a lot of experience in how to ensure that students are reading and writing in other curriculum areas as well as how to ensure that our English language learners are maximizing instruction so that they’re English abilities grow with them in McKinney ISD. It will be very beneficial to be able to look at our curriculum and really ensure that we are meeting the needs of our bilingual language learners.”

Suzy Woodard, MISD assistant superintendent of elementary learner support said, “Judy was a very impressive candidate and we’re very excited about what she is going to bring to our team.”

Vega holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the University of Texas and a Master of Educational Administration degree from the University of North Texas.

“One of the biggest takeaways from my experience in education is the profound influence we have to transform and shape the future of the students in our charge,” said Vega. “I’m excited to join such a strong, dedicated and accomplished team in planning the next steps in providing a top-notch education for MISD students.”
