Dear McKinney ISD Parents,

We know that the past few weeks have been challenging, both for teachers and for our parents and students. We are proud of the hard work of our staff and students to make the best of these unprecedented circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students are doing a great job completing assignments and working to continue learning in spite of these challenges.

The district has studied many options related to the McKinney ISD grading policy. Administering grades fairly and equitably is much more difficult with online learning due to the wide range of external factors that impact learning and may be outside of the student’s control. After a significant amount of consideration McKinney ISD has determined that the most appropriate and fair approach is to freeze the 3rd quarter (nine-weeks) grades, carry these grades over to the 4th quarter (nine-weeks), and continue providing teacher feedback on assignments completed during the 4th quarter (nine-weeks).

The grades your child received in courses during the 3rd quarter will serve as the 2nd semester grade upon satisfactory completion of 4th quarter assignments. For high school credit courses, students will be permitted to make up assignments if they were failing, and they will be provided an opportunity for credit recovery.

Teachers will continue to expect students to complete assignments and will follow up with students not meeting these expectations. This will also require cooperation and partnership with parents, in order to hold students accountable for completion of assignments. The most important thing to consider is not the grade, but the learning that is taking place. We know families, students, and teachers are doing their best during this difficult time, and we look forward to finishing the year strong.

Some parents may be concerned about their kids falling behind or missing concepts and skills. Please rest assured that we will support student learning now and into the fall to ensure that they are caught up and that students learn all of the required subject matter and skills necessary to be successful at every level. Sabemos que las últimas semanas han sido difíciles, tanto para los maestros como para nuestros padres y estudiantes. Estamos muy orgullosos del arduo trabajo realizado por nuestro personal y estudiantes, para sacar el máximo provecho de estas circunstancias sin precedentes durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Los estudiantes están haciendo un gran trabajo completando asignaciones y trabajando para continuar aprendiendo a pesar de estos desafíos.

McKinney ISD, ha estudiado cuidadosamente un número de opciones relacionadas con la política de calificaciones del distrito. Sabemos que administrar calificaciones de manera justa y equitativa es más difícil con el aprendizaje en línea, debido a la amplia gama de factores externos que afectan el aprendizaje y que pueden estar fuera del control del estudiante. Después de mucha consideración, McKinney ISD ha determinado que lo más adecuado y  justo es congelar las calificaciones de las 3ra nueve semanas y llevar estas calificaciones hacia las 4ta nueve semanas. Mientras, los maestros continuarán proporcionando retroalimentación en las asignaciones realizadas durante las 4ta nueve semanas.

Las calificaciones que su hijo/a recibió en los cursos durante las 3ra nueve semanas serán las calificaciones del segundo semestre después de completar satisfactoriamente las asignaciones de las 4ta nueve semanas. Para los cursos con crédito de escuela secundaria, se les permitirá a los estudiantes completar asignaciones si estaban reprobando para  brindarles la oportunidad de recuperar el crédito.

Se espera que los estudiantes continúen completando las asignaciones y los maestros harán  un seguimiento con los estudiantes que no cumplan con estas expectativas. Esto también requerirá cooperación y asociación con los padres, con el  fin de responsabilizar a los estudiantes por completar sus asignaciones. Lo más importante a considerar no es la calificación, sino el aprendizaje que se está llevando a cabo. Sabemos que las familias, los estudiantes y los maestros están haciendo todo lo posible durante este momento difícil, y esperamos terminar el año con fuerza.

Sabemos que algunos padres podrían estar preocupados por el retraso de sus hijos o la falta de conceptos y habilidades. Tenga la seguridad de que apoyaremos el aprendizaje de los estudiantes ahora y en el otoño para garantizar que se pongan al día y que los estudiantes aprendan todas las materias y habilidades necesarias para tener éxito en todos los niveles. ¡Gracias por su continuo apoyo y tengamos una gran semana de aprendizaje!
