McKinney, Texas – It is always one of the highlights of the school year, an evening set aside by McKinney ISD to celebrate its most exemplary educators, to shine the spotlight on their incredible, tireless work, inside and outside of the classroom. To recognize and celebrate the powerful, life-changing impact they have on MISD students.

They are the best of the best.

The annual Teacher of the Year Dinner is one of the highlights of the school year each spring.

On Thursday, April 7, McKinney ISD officials, campus administrators, teachers, family and guests gathered at the MISD Community Event Center to honor the 2021–2022 MISD Campus Teachers of the Year and, from among them, to name the MISD Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year.

After being chosen at the campus level, each of these remarkable educators took part in a portfolio and interview process for consideration to represent the district in the Region 10 Teacher of the Year program as the Elementary or Secondary Teacher of the Year.

For 2021–2022, Erica Johnson from Press Elementary School was named the MISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Melvin Crosby from McKinney North High School was named the MISD Secondary Teacher of the Year.

It was a Teacher of the Year celebration that was marked, perhaps more than any other, by a sense of legacy. Seven of the 2022 Campus Teachers of the Year are alumni of MISD, including Crosby, who was an athlete in high school under Shawn Pratt at MHS. And, Johnson in her remarks at the podium, thanked the principals and assistant principals who helped make her a better teacher during her educational journey.

“The 2022 Teacher of the Year Dinner was one for the ages,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Rick McDaniel. “The representatives from each of the campuses were as good as we’ve ever had, and I am so happy for our winner from Press Elementary and from McKinney North High School. They will represent McKinney ISD well in the next level of competition. I continue to be impressed by the love for kids that I see in all of our Teachers of the Year, and I could not be more proud of them. In my mind, they are all winners.”
