The McKinney High School Philharmonic Orchestra performs under the direction of Kathleen Crabtree during the 2020–2021 school year. The orchestra earned Commended Winner recognition in the Citation of Excellence String Orchestra Project.

The Mark of Excellence competition features five categories: National Wind Band Honors, National Choral Honors, National Orchestra Honors, National Jazz Honors and National Percussion Ensemble Honors. Honors awarded in the Citation of Excellence fall under the two categories of bands and string orchestras. Groups enter the competitions by submitting recorded performances that are adjudicated by nationally renowned university directors.

Over the past 14 years, the project has received entries from 38 states. All groups receive recorded and written comments from the adjudicators, and a compilation recording of the National Winners.

Foundation Managing Director Rick Yancey said, “Despite the many COVID restrictions, so many musical ensembles still made amazing musical performances. These directors and their communities should be very proud of their outstanding accomplishments!”
