McKinney, Texas – With summer now in full swing, it’s that time of year when the prospect of hitting the streets in a brand new car becomes exponentially more appealing. For McKinney ISD 2020 Elementary Teacher of the Year Sandy Eiland (Slaughter Elementary) and 2020 Secondary Teacher of the Year Rosalyn Govan (Cockrill Middle School), that summertime scenario has already been taken care of—free of charge.

On Monday, June 1, El Dorado Chevrolet put each of them behind the wheel of a brand new Chevy, and about every three months for the next year, they’ll return the vehicles and each get a new vehicle to drive.

It’s the seventh year that Eldorado has honored the MISD Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year with a new vehicle to drive.

“For the last few years we have done a special where we try to put two teachers, the Secondary Teacher of the Year and the Elementary Teacher of the Year in a vehicle from El Dorado,” said El Dorado General Sales Manager Jas Gill. “It’s just a little service to our teachers to give back to the school district … since all of our kids have gone to school here. We’re so grateful to all of the teachers in McKinney, Texas.”

El Dorado has a been a longtime supporter of the district and was named one of the district’s Top 10 Business Partners in 2019. In addition to the ongoing Teacher of the Year car program, they have also donated used cars for Project Graduation giveaways and in 2011 donated a new one-ton pickup for the district’s FFA students to transport livestock projects to and from shows. They also promote the district through billboard advertisements, sponsor various MISD programs and sponsor the KLAK Teacher of the Month program—which frequently features MISD teachers.

To kick off Eiland and Govan’s year of new vehicles, El Dorado provided them with matching 2020 Chevy Trax in the sporty and sleek, all-black LT Redline trim. As GM factories move back into production and El Dorado’s inventory replenishes over the coming months, Eiland and Govan will have the opportunity to choose from a broad range of Chevy vehicles including the always popular Camaro and Tahoe models and the new Blazer.

“It’s just such an amazing gesture,” said Govan, standing beside her new Chevy Trax. “It’s a long-standing tradition, and I used to read about this before my kids were even in school and see that the Teachers of the Year got cars from El Dorado Chevrolet. But, really what it means to me is that we have such a strong partnership between our community and our schools, and it’s just nice to work and have that kind of support here.”

Eiland was equally grateful to El Dorado. “This whole Teacher of the Year experience has just been overwhelming. It’s been amazing and exciting and fun. And, I thank Eldorado Chevrolet for recognizing teachers and educators and the job that we do.”

And, with that, Eiland and Govan were all set to drive off into the endless summer sun—courtesy of El Dorado Chevrolet.
