2018 McKinney ISD Graduation in Photos
With the traditional toss of the graduation caps, the 2018 McKinney Boyd High School graduation comes to a close.
McKinney, Texas – When the authoritative voice of McKinney Boyd High School government teacher Randy Bilyeu boomed forth over the sound system at the Allen Event Center last Friday morning and called Trevor Nguyen forward, the 2018 Boyd Valedictorian stepped toward MISD Board President Curtis Rippee, shook his hand and received his diploma.
In doing so, Nguyen became the first in a long, winding train of MISD graduates that would span three commencement ceremonies and eventually reach its conclusion some 11 hours later when McKinney North High School announcer Kevin McPherson called the name of North senior Ruaya Adalberto Zamora Lagos.
In all, more than 1,700 McKinney ISD graduates received their diplomas on Friday, June 8.
The day began at 9 a.m. as “Pomp and Circumstance” heralded the entrance of Boyd’s graduates in striking, red robes. At one o’clock, the largest graduating class in McKinney High School history—nearly 700-strong—poured into the arena like a blue wave and were greeted with loud, heartfelt applause and cheers from the audience. The final commencement ceremony of the day began at 6 p.m. as the graduates from North marched into the arena wearing deep blue robes and bold, orange regalia and took their places under the lights of the Allen Event Center.
As beaming parents, friends and extended family looked on, graduates moved across the stage, one by one, shaking the hands of board members and MISD Superintendent Dr. Rick McDaniel. They waved at loved ones in the stands and stopped to pose for pictures with their principal. They strolled down the ramp and off the stage where there were more photos and hand-shaking as they made their way back to their seats.
It was a journey they began 13 years ago when they stood at the door of a kindergarten classroom for the first time.
On Friday, they found themselves standing at the edge of the graduation stage prepared for a new beginning. The school songs were sung, the caps flung into the air and these students entered the world of adulthood.
In the fall, a new group of kids will cross the thresholds of kindergarten classes all across MISD and join the long train of students who will one day, like the class of 2018, stand at the edge of the graduation stage waiting for their name to be called.
And, for this year’s class of graduates and all who follow after, we hope their journey is rich with success and marked by joy.
