Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, our MISD 2nd grade students will be part of a new community partnership as they participate in a field trip to McKinney Roots. McKinney Roots is a food donation farm in McKinney. Their mission is to supply fresh produce to the food insecure by growing and distributing it to local nonprofits, churches, and schools, alleviating hunger with healthful, nutrient-dense food.
To date, McKinney Roots has raised and donated over 3,000 dozen eggs, 11,000 pounds of vegetables, and partnered to donate groceries for over 1,000 families a week.
Our 2nd grade students will participate in a classroom visit from McKinney Roots to learn about farming and prepare for their in-person trip to the farm. In the classroom they will compute mathematically what is produced and begin the planting of seeds that they will transplant when they arrive at the farm.
While they are on their field trip, at the farm, they will participate in hands-on stations to learn about planting, volunteering, and gathering eggs from the over 400 chickens!
It is our goal to grow the whole child and showing the power of being a volunteer and supporting our community is one step in the right direction. A special thank you to Rick Wells, McKinney Roots staff, Sharon Sovereign, and Superintendent Shawn Pratt for making this partnership possible.
