On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Faubion Middle School's 7th grade Texas History students learned about local government from the experts — Mayor George Fuller and members of the McKinney City Council — during Faubion's mock city council day.

A different council member visited during each period of the day to talk about the ins and outs of local governance and to give students a taste of what it's like to conduct a city council meeting. Student representatives filled out the mock city council seats alongside their guests in the FMS auditorium as they addressed student proposed issues such as adding recess to the middle school schedule, requiring uniforms and extending the daily lunch period.

Council members talked about the vital role of local government, and Fuller emphasized the importance civil discourse, even in the midst of strong disagreement. For their part, the FMS seventh graders did a thorough and insightful job of arguing both sides of each issue and asking thoughtful questions.

"It was a big day today at Faubion Middle School," said Principal Mitch VandenBoom. "Our students learned about the functionality of municipal government while exploring topics of personal interest. Thank you to council members Gere Feltus, Michael Jones, Justin Beller, Patrick Cloutier, County Probate Judge Sarah Duff and Mayor George Fuller!"

Each month, after our board meeting, we provide our community with a brief summary of events and items covered during the meeting.

Video: https://tinyurl.com/4uy4tue2

We started the December meeting with celebrations and recognitions.

We celebrated our “Every Student, Every Day” award recipients.
This month’s winners are Parker Juricek from Dowell Middle School and Isabella Robinson from McKinney Boyd High School.

Next we celebrated Frazier Elementary as they were selected our McKinney ISD “Lives Kind” winner for the month of December. Thank you, Frazier Elementary, for having kindness at the forefront of your school culture.

Then we celebrated our elementary and secondary McKinney ISD STEAM Ambassadors. These educators have demonstrated a commitment to implementing a STEAM education into each of our campuses.

We also honored the McKinney North UIL State Marching Band Finalists. They finished 10th place, out of 252 5A schools, at the UIL State Marching Championships. This is the first time in school history for this to happen!

To wrap up our recognitions, we recognized this year’s elementary, middle, and high school holiday card art contest winners.

We then moved on to the presentation portion of the meeting.

Aretha Jackson, Senior Director of Legal Affairs, provided a GKC Policy update.

Zabdi Gonzalez, Senior Director of English Learner Support, shared a presentation on the emergent bilingual and two-way dual language program in McKinney ISD. Caldwell Elementary offers the dual language program, and Principal Karla Massey contributed to the presentation with her insights. Molly Hovan, Executive Director of Elementary Schools, provided information on the review of the program, and she provided staff and parent feedback about the program. Program considerations and next steps were shared as well.

Next Dr. Shelly Spaulding, Assistant Superintendent, provided an update on our McKinney ISD Strategic plan, pillar 5: Communications. The focus of the presentation was on the key performance indicators and the progress the district has made with both internal and external communications.

Finally, the findings of an intruder detection audit were presented by Russell May, Senior Director of Safety and Security.

The Board approved the consent agenda and then moved to the discussion & action portion of the meeting where the Board approved the Academic Calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. Then the Board reviewed and approved the monthly written reports.

Those are the highlights from this month’s meeting. Thank you for watching, and we look forward to bringing you the highlights from our next regularly scheduled board meeting on January 21st at 6 PM. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

On Dec. 3-5, MISD held its annual Career & Technical Education Tours at the MISD Community Event Center for the district's 8th graders from Cockrill, Dowell, Evans, Faubion and Scott Johnson.

The event aimed to build student awareness of the broad range of high school CTE programs before they begin the process of selecting courses for 9th grade—to provide a foundation for career paths and college readiness as they begin to chart their course for high school and beyond.

During the tours, groups rotated through 19 stations where they met current MISD high school students who provided course overviews and answered questions about their respective CTE programs—everything from aviation to cosmetology to welding.
