McKinney, Texas — The McKinney North High School Jazz Band has been selected to perform at the prestigious Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City April 30 – May 2, 2026.

The invitation represents the highest level of national achievement earned by a McKinney ISD jazz ensemble. Directed by Connor Vaughan, McKinney North is one of only 20 high school jazz bands selected for the 2026 festival and one of only three chosen from Texas.

“The Essentially Ellington Festival is the pinnacle of high school jazz competitions in the United States,” said Dr. Jared Critchfield, McKinney ISD Director of Fine Arts. “The selection process is highly competitive and rigorous, making MNHS Jazz’s acceptance a remarkable achievement. This honor reflects Mr. Vaughn’s vision, as well as the dedication and commitment of our students and their families. We are proud that the MNHS Jazz Band has placed McKinney ISD among the swankiest jazz programs in the nation.”

They earned the invitation by submitting recorded performances of selections from the Essentially Ellington library, including newly released works by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The ensemble began preparing during the summer, studying the music of legendary composer Duke Ellington and his collaborators and meticulously selecting the pieces that best suited the strengths of the band.

Rehearsals went beyond learning notes and rhythms as the students explored phrasing, articulation, style, balance, feel and the historical context behind each piece. It included extensive listening sessions and student-led rehearsals, culminating in two days of studio recording.

“This milestone represents stability in our identity and establishes a culture of excellence built on standards, mentorship and student ownership,” Vaughan said.

The North Jazz Band will travel to New York City to participate in educational clinics and workshops, receive feedback from members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and perform alongside some of the best high school jazz ensembles from across the nation.

The accomplishment reflects the continued support of McKinney ISD Fine Arts leadership, dedicated parents and strong community partnerships—including professional musicians from the Dallas arts community who mentor and collaborate with McKinney North students. A community send-off performance will be announced prior to the band’s departure, offering families, friends and supporters an opportunity to celebrate the students as they prepare to represent McKinney ISD on a national stage.
