McKinney, Texas — Scott Johnson Middle School has been officially re-designated as a Texas School to Watch, following a comprehensive campus visit by the Schools to Watch (STW) Site Team. The designation recognizes the school’s continued excellence in academic achievement, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structures and processes.

Initially named a School to Watch in 2016, this year marks the third time SJMS has been re-designated as a School to Watch.

During the site visit, the STW team observed a strong culture of learning led by Principal Holly Rogers, whose leadership emphasizes continuous growth for both students and staff. The team noted engaging instructional practices such as station teaching and small-group learning, consistent data analysis to inform instruction and a campus-wide focus on student goal setting.

Scott Johnson Middle School was also praised for its developmental responsiveness, offering students a wide range of academic, athletic, fine arts and leadership opportunities, including high school credit courses. Students reported feeling supported, challenged and safe, citing strong relationships with teachers and staff who prioritize both academic and emotional well-being.

The site team highlighted SJMS' diverse staff and student body, inclusive programming and leadership opportunities for all students. With more than 17 languages and cultures represented, SJMS fosters a welcoming environment through initiatives such as cultural celebrations and family engagement opportunities.

Strong organizational structures further support the campus’s success, including regular PLC meetings, grade-level planning, vertical alignment and professional development opportunities tailored to teacher and student needs. The site team commended the collaborative culture among administrators, teachers and support staff.

"We are so proud of all the hard work of our teachers and staff to be re-designated as a Texas Schools to Watch campus," said Rogers. "Having our students, parents and staff shine a spotlight on the diversity and academic growth happening at Scott Johnson makes me a proud principal."

In its final remarks, the site team described Scott Johnson Middle School as “one of the strongest schools” they have visited and credited Rogers’ use of the Schools to Watch four-pillar model as a continuous improvement tool.

Scott Johnson Middle School’s re-designation affirms its ongoing commitment to excellence and its dedication to meeting the academic and developmental needs of every student.
