McKinney ISD

McKinney, Texas (Nov. 5, 2025) — After months of careful study, discussion, and community input, the McKinney ISD Board of Trustees has approved the decision to repurpose three elementary campuses—Eddins Elementary, McNeil Elementary, and Wolford Elementary—as part of the district’s long-range facility and financial plan.

This decision follows years of strategic planning and collaboration with community stakeholders, including more than 300 parents, staff, students, and community members who participated in the district’s Strategic Planning Committee and Long-Range Facility Planning Committee.

“We know this decision carries deep emotion,” said Shawn Pratt, McKinney ISD Superintendent. “Our schools are more than buildings—they are communities filled with relationships, memories, and traditions. This decision was made only after thoughtful planning and a clear understanding of the challenges facing our district. From the time that elementary school consolidation was recommended by the Long Range Facility Planning Committee last year, we knew there was no way to implement a plan without directly impacting valued families and communities. Unfortunately, our financial realities are clear, and this is one of several necessary steps we have taken—and continue to take—to ensure our district can offer excellent educational experiences for every MISD student. This is one of many measures we’ve had to consider to balance what was once a $23 million deficit.”

Addressing Financial Challenges

Over the past two years, McKinney ISD has worked diligently to address a $23 million budget deficit by reducing expenditures by $15 million for the 2025–26 school year. Despite these efforts—and the passage of House Bill 2—state funding continues to fall short of the actual costs of educating students.

“Over the past two years, McKinney ISD has been transparent about the financial challenges confronting our district. Despite reducing $15 million in expenditures for the 2024–25 budget—including a Central Office reduction in force and campus staff reductions through attrition—state funding continues to fall short of meeting the true cost of educating students. Taking proactive steps now is essential to maintaining the financial stability that allows us to provide competitive teacher pay and sustain high-quality academic programs,” Superintendent Pratt said

Next Steps: Rezoning and Community Collaboration

With the approval of the repurposing plan, McKinney ISD will now begin the rezoning process through the Educational Facilities Alignment Committee (EFAC). This committee—composed of parent representatives from each campus—will work closely with district leadership to review enrollment data, neighborhood growth patterns, and facility capacities. The EFAC will develop recommendations for new attendance boundaries to be presented to the Board of Trustees. Throughout this process, the district will prioritize transparency and community engagement, including opportunities for public input before any final decisions are made.

Supporting Students, Families, and Staff

In the coming months, the district will implement a comprehensive transition plan to support students and families affected by campus repurposing and rezoning. This plan includes welcome events, orientation activities, and ongoing family engagement to ensure a smooth transition. Students impacted by the changes will also receive priority consideration for transfer requests, based on space availability.

McKinney ISD has committed to supporting every staff member during this process. All employees from the three campuses are guaranteed positions within the district, with maintained salaries. The Human Resources Department will work individually with each staff member to assist with placement based on their experience and preferences.

Continuing Excellence and Connection

“Our top priority remains the same—to ensure that every child in McKinney ISD feels safe, supported, and connected,” said Superintendent Pratt. “As we prepare for these transitions, our focus is on teaching, learning, and finishing this school year strong.”

Gratitude and Community Partnership

“We are deeply grateful for the trust and partnership of our families, staff, and community,” Superintendent Pratt added. “While these changes are challenging, they are essential to ensuring the long-term success and stability of McKinney ISD and the students we serve.”
