McKinney, Texas — Serenity High is a small school that makes a big difference. If you didn't know it was there, tucked away on the south side of McKinney North High School, you could easily miss it. But, for the students who have attended Serenity, this small high school has had a huge impact.

On April 8, McKinney ISD officials and community members came together at the MISD Community Event Center for the annual Serenity High Fundraising Breakfast to support, celebrate and reflect on the work of Serenity.

The event raised $41,000 for Serenity—one of the very few public recovery high schools in the country.

Founded by Neil and Lynn Sperry, the school opened its doors on October 11, 1999, to give hope to students who have successfully completed a recovery program and to offer a path to a Texas high school diploma in a sober environment.

Since its inception, more than 300 students have completed their academic journey and crossed the graduation stage—students who might have never done so, if not for the work of Serenity High.

At the breakfast, speaker Joshua Keith, a former Serenity student, praised the work of the school and its continued influence on his life. Neil and Lynn Sperry spoke of Serenity's origins and its crucial presence as a resource for students and their parents.

Keynote speaker Michael Molthan detailed his downward spiral and the arduous path out of addiction, a journey that included 27 arrests and a revolving door in and out of jail. Then came the stirrings of change in Molthan and an early release from a four year sentence—an unexpected chance at sobriety and a new start. It was an opportunity that changed the course of Molthan's life.

For some students, Serenity is that kind of opportunity.

Serenity Assistant Principal Allie Long expressed deep gratitude for all of those who have invested in the work of the school. "We are so grateful for your support," she said. "Your donations are positively impacting our students so that they can continue a path of sobriety and reach their goal of earning their high school diploma in a safe, supportive, and sober environment. On behalf of the Serenity Advisory Board, staff and students, we thank you for your generosity."
