McKinney ISD recognizes that parents are the primary decision makers regarding their child's access to library materials. To assist parents in making decisions about what library materials their child can access, we have enabled parent controls on both of our student library checkout platforms: Destiny and Sora.

Parents and guardians can view their student's library book checkouts and block or lock specific books by utilizing the parent library access tools described below.

Parents will need to set restrictions for each of their children separately within each platform.

Book title restrictions set by parents within Destiny will immediately restrict library book checkouts. These restrictions will also be communicated to classroom teachers to restrict access to the same title if it is available in the classroom library. Please allow up to 48 hours for relevant teachers to be notified of new book restrictions.

When searching for titles in the parent access tool, search results will include titles that may be found in any MISD library, from preschool to high school. Some titles that appear may not available in the specific school library; these titles are labeled as "Available offsite only." To search a specific school's library, please use the parent SSO portal and click on the MISD Library Search tile.

Parents can restrict, or lock, any audiobook or ebook for their child using Sora's Parent Controls.

Parents can access the controls via the Sora tile on their SSO dashboard (https://portal.mckinneyisd.net/). They will need their child’s Sora login information to access the account.  Within the Sora account settings, parents turn on parent controls, and set a PIN code.

If a parent or guardian needs support for a forgotten PIN code, please submit a technology help ticket using the Incident IQ help ticket tile on the parent SSO portal dashboard.

Parents will need to lock each title and format of the book(s) separately. Locks placed on titles can be removed by the parent or guardian at any time.

If a parent or guardian would like the restriction(s) made in Sora to carry over to the school and classroom library as applicable, please email your campus Library Media Specialist and classroom teacher(s) with your child's name and the specific titles you do not want your child to check out. Note: Not all books available on Sora are available within the school or class library.

Students' ebook and audiobook checkouts within Sora are automatically returned after a two-week lending period.
