

Middle School CTE Courses
Our Middle school CTE classes provide exposure to career-focused content, incorporate hands-on curriculum and connect to MISD high school Career & Technical Education programs of study.
Note: CTE courses are part of Programs of Study, which include coherent course sequences, industry-based certifications, and work-based learning opportunities for students. Several Programs of Study begin with these CTE courses in middle school.
Career and College Exploration (Grade 7) The goal of this course is to help students build college and career awareness. Students will engage in exploration of the MISD CTE career clusters to create a foundation for success in high school, options for post-secondary studies, and potential careers. Students will also explore post-secondary options that align with their potential interests and goals. Students will research labor market information, learn job seeking skills, and create documents required for employment.
Engineering Essentials PLTW (Grade 8) Fees may be required. This class is offered for 1.0 unit of high school credit. This is a full-year course designed to be a student’s first exposure to the PLTW Engineering program. Students explore the work of engineers and their role in the design and development of solutions to real-world problems. The course introduces students to engineering concepts that are applicable across multiple engineering disciplines and empowers them to build technical skills through the use of a variety of engineering tools, such as geographic information systems (GIS), 3-D solid modeling software, and prototyping equipment. Students learn and apply the engineering design process to develop mechanical, electronic, process, and logistical solutions to relevant problems across a variety of industries. Note: Courses taken for high school credit in middle school count toward graduation credit requirements but are not factored into GPA or rank calculations in high school. Colleges and organizations like the NCAA may recalculate your GPA for admissions, possibly including these middle school courses.
Principles of Arts, Audio Visual and Communications (Grade 8) This year-long class is offered for 1.0 unit of high school credit. This course offers students practical experience using Adobe Creative Suite in multimedia, print, and graphic design projects. Students will gain knowledge and proficiency in audio and video production using Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Audition; graphic design using digital cameras, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, and explore computer animation using Adobe Flash. Note: Courses taken for high school credit in middle school count toward graduation credit requirements but are not factored into GPA or rank calculations in high school. Colleges and organizations like the NCAA may recalculate your GPA for admissions, possibly including these middle school courses.
