About the Local School Library Advisory Council (LSLAC)

The McKinney ISD Local School Library Advisory Council (LSLAC) is a group appointed by the Board of Trustees to assist the District in ensuring local community values are reflected in each school library catalog.   The LSLAC provides recommendations to the District regarding adding and removing library materials as well as making changes to policies or guidelines related to the District's library collection.  The LSLAC is comprised of seven voting members who are parents or guardians of students enrolled in the District, and less than seven non-voting members who are district employees. 

LSLAC Roles and Duties

The duties of the LSLAC are to:

  • Serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Trustees.

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of the library collection development standards and the District processes associated with the collection of library materials. 

  • Provide recommendations on policies and guidelines related to the District’s library collection.

  • Participate in the review of library materials proposed for purchase.

  • Provide recommendations to the Board whether library materials proposed for purchase are appropriate for the recommended grade level(s) in the District’s library collection.

  • Provide recommendations to the Board on the removal of any library materials the council determines to be harmful material or material containing indecent content or profane content that is inconsistent with local community values or age appropriateness.

  • Provide recommendations to the Board on the action to be taken by the District in response to challenges of library materials.

Board Policies EFB (LEGAL) and EFB (LOCAL) govern the processes related to library collection development which include the ongoing evaluation, selection, acquisition, and deselection processes of library materials. All recommendations made by the LSLAC must comply with the applicable laws and policies related to library collection development.
