AVID
Evans Middle School is an AVID Demonstration school which means it has been identified as an exemplary model of the AVID college readiness system.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. Students from grade six to twelve are enrolled in McKinney ISD AVID program. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curricula with the support that AVID provides.
AVID students are enrolled in a school’s advanced classes, and attend an academic elective class—called AVID—taught within the school day by a trained AVID teacher. The three main components of the AVID college readiness system are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational and college prep activities. The AVID curriculum is based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, collaborative grouping, organization, and academic reading.
Tutors are available in the AVID elective class where they facilitate student success in advanced classes. University and college students are preferred as tutors because they also serve as college role models for students, but other adults can tutor also. All tutors receive formal training in AVID methodologies and good tutoring procedures.
Persons interested in becoming and AVID tutor should contact one of the AVID District Facilitators, Lauren Inge at linge@mckinneyisd.net or Leslie D’Annibale at ldannibale@mckinneyisd.net. Applications for AVID tutor can be sent to MISD directly via the MISD Employment page.
Each MISD secondary school has multiple AVID classes in which tutors are needed two days each week. Tutors receive $15 per hour of in-class work. View additional information about becoming an AVID Tutor.
