26-27 Transfer Process Information

2026–2027 Attendance Zones & Transfer Process Information

 Zoned Campus Assignment (Default Placement)
All students will be assigned to their designated attendance zone for the 2026–2027 school year. Students will remain assigned to their zoned campus unless and until they complete any approved transfer or grandfathering documentation.

Notification Letters
Before winter break, families received a personalized notification letter identifying their assigned zoned campus for the 2026–2027 school year. These letters were intended to provide early clarity and allow families time to review information and plan ahead. All eligible students were offered the opportunity to remain on their current campus.

Update: 2-13-26

All K–8 student transfer approval processes will be placed on hold beginning today, February 16, through February 23. A limited number of notifications will be sent to families on Monday, February 16.

This hold will allow families of middle and high school students, as well as campuses, to have an updated and accurate list of students and ensure clarity regarding extracurricular opportunities.

Administrative Services will resume processing, approving, and denying transfers on February 24.

All employee student transfers, Intent to Remain requests, and Choose McKinney applications for rising 7th and 8th grade students are complete to date. K–6 applications remain under review.

Please note: Transfers approved during the remainder of the school year may impact extracurricular opportunities. It is the responsibility of the family to confirm with the appropriate program director regarding any potential effects on a student’s eligibility or participation.

Grandfathering: Rising 5th, 8th, or 12th Grade
Families with a rising 5th-, 8th-, or 12th-grade student who has been rezoned for the 2026–2027 school year may request for their student to remain at their current campus. Families must complete the Intent to Remain form included in their notification letter to be considered.

**Current** Choose McKinney Transfers

(Intradistrict - Resident)
Families whose students currently attend a campus through a Choose McKinney intradistrict transfer may complete an Intent to Remain form to request continuation of their transfer for the 2026–2027 school year.

**New** Choose McKinney Transfer Requests

(Intradistrict - Resident)
Families of rising kindergarten through 8th-grade students may request a transfer to selected campuses through the Choose McKinney application process. All requests are reviewed and approved based on campus availability.

**Current** Choose McKinney Transfers (Interdistrict - Non-Resident)
MISD will first ensure that all students residing within district boundaries are placed at a campus. Once intradistrict placements are finalized, the district will prioritize current interdistrict K–8 transfer students. Families can expect communication regarding interdistrict placement decisions by early February 2026.

**New** Choose McKinney Transfers (Interdistrict - Non-Resident)
After intradistrict placements are complete and campus capacity is confirmed, MISD will open the interdistrict transfer window for families who wish to apply for the following school year.

Programmatic Transfers

Programmatic transfers are available for students enrolled in designated district programs, such as the Caldwell Dual Language Academy, Career and Technical Education pathways, and the Collegiate Academy of McKinney. These transfers are tied to program participation and remain in effect if the student continues to meet program requirements.

High School Transfers
General high school transfers are not available for the 2025–2026 or 2026–2027 school years.

McKinney ISD recognizes that unique circumstances may arise. Documented high school hardship requests will be reviewed on an individual, case-by-case basis. Approval is not guaranteed, and decisions are guided by established criteria, campus capacity, and the district’s responsibility to serve all students.

Sibling Transfers
While MISD understands the importance of keeping families together, sibling placement is not guaranteed. All K–8 siblings must apply through the Choose McKinney process. Placement decisions are based on campus availability.
