Caldwell 4th and 5th grade students learning states of matter, physical properties and thermal energy through art:
Students have been learning about the glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly, and his beautiful glass art sculptures. Mr. Chihuly creates his art through a combination of glass bowing and sculpting allowing thermal energy, centrifugal force and gravity to influence his works. During our annual 4th grade art field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art both 4th and 5th grade students were given the opportunity to observe one of Mr. Chihuly’s large scale pieces of art, called Hart Window.
Students were tasked with creating radial designs on clear plastic plates. They were then asked to follow Mr. Chihuly’s process of apply thermal energy to change the plate’s physical state of matter from a solid to a liquid and back to a solid. Every sculpture plate is different based on how long areas of the plate were heated or allowed to remain liquified and whether or not students allowed gravity to assist in their sculpture making. They witnessed both the cause and effect of applying thermal energy to plastic and how gravity can be helpful in creating a work of art.
The work created by the students will become a collaborative artwork that can be seen during Caldwell’s open house night on April 1, 2025.
