McKinney ISD practices the nationally-acclaimed Standard Response Protocol (SRP) as part of our comprehensive safety and security plan in response to any given crisis situation. The protocols activate four specific actions that can be performed during any incident by students, staff, teachers and first responders. Our staff, school resource officers and area law enforcement agencies have been trained in the SRP, and we want you to be a partner in safety, too.
We recognize that safety is also a partnership with parents and we want you to know the basic four actions and terminology used in the event of an emergency: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. A one-page description of the terms and action for each response is available here: SRP Handout. Safety committees at each school will be reviewing the protocols with students and staff prior to each particular drill, and our district substitute orientation has been updated to include SRP training. We encourage you to look through the attached literature so that you will be aware of these basic responses we are utilizing throughout the district.
In addition to our SRP, we have the Hall Pass Visitor Management System at each of our campuses. This system processes background checks of visitors against custom school databases and a national sex-offender database.
Thank you for your continued support. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Safety, Security & Transportation Department at 469-302-4096.
Districts across Texas are dealing with the challenge of students making threats toward other students and/or their school. In most of these cases, students make impulsive statements, texts or social media posts to impress their friends, or they claim that they are intended as a joke. In most cases, these do not pose an immediate threat to the safety of students or the school.
However—and this is where we need help from McKinney ISD parents—every threat will be taken seriously in MISD and investigated in partnership with the McKinney Police Department. That means that claiming a post or text was intended to be a joke or that it was a flippant statement or impulsive reaction is not a valid defense. In every case, MISD involves the McKinney Police Department, and the student will be held criminally responsible for his/her actions.
Please have a dialogue with your children about the significance of inappropriate or threatening statements, texts, social media posts or Snapchat posts. Please remind them that these statements can result in a permanent criminal record and even felony charges. Students will face both district and legal consequences for making any statements deemed to be a threat.
We will continue to take necessary steps to ensure a safe and secure learning environment at every MISD campus, and you can help us by having ongoing conversations with your children about the significance of what they say, text and post. Thanks for your ongoing support.
MISD bus driver Ed Hagar remembers how tough the teenage years can be, so he encourages his high school riders with inspirational notes each Friday.
Patriot Day honors the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001. Pictured above: McClure Elementary students honor local first responders.
Fall athletics are in full swing across the district. We encourage parents, students, and members of the MISD community to get out and support these wonderful young athletes.
