Dear McKinney ISD Family,
We are all saddened by the events that occurred at McKinney North High School today. There is nothing more tragic than the loss of a young person’s life. We are working to learn as much as possible to determine the cause of today’s tragedy, and to determine if anything could have been done to prevent such events. Our thoughts and prayers also go out to the victim’s family, friends, and the entire McKinney North High School community. We have many unanswered questions at this time, and some of them we may never be able to answer. However, I want parents to know that no matter how large of a district we become, we are all still one family, and we care deeply about every student, parent, and staff member in McKinney ISD.
On Monday, we will have additional counselors and grief support at McKinney North High School to provide support to students impacted by this tragedy. In addition to our regular MNHS School Resource Officers we will also have additional security on site for student support and reassurance. There has never been a time at which public schools have had a more heightened sense of awareness when it comes to school safety. We understand that there are a wide range of viewpoints on this issue, but I think we all agree that at the federal, state, and local levels we can all do more. The close partnership between the McKinney ISD and McKinney PD was evidenced today by an immediate and overwhelming response. In addition, McKinney North High School staff and students initiated the district lock-down protocol impeccably. We will continue to evaluate all of our safety protocols and improve where possible.
We will provide additional details when they become available, but let us all focus our attention on our children this weekend, and know that we will greet them with hugs and words of encouragement on Monday.
Sincerely,
Dr. Rick McDaniel
Superintendent of Schools
