What's Happening in the Library?

Throughout October, Kindergarten and 1st grade classes enjoyed read-alouds in the library featuring Hispanic authors and illustrators.

After reading Alma and How She Got Her Name, by Juana Martinez-Neal, kindergarten students used Makerspace materials to create the letters in their own names. After reading Gustavo the Shy Little Ghost, by Flavia Z. Drago, 1st graders learned about camouflage and created their own “Gustavos,” hiding them so they would blend in with their surroundings. They also discussed the problem and solution in the story.

We also had a very successful Book Fair and Literacy+S.T.E.A.M. Night! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and to all of our families who supported our school by shopping at the fair. We appreciate you!

The Book Character Pumpkin Patch was so much fun! Students and teachers have loved seeing all of the creative designs when they visit the library.

Digital Citizenship Week

October 19–23 was Digital Citizenship Week! The 4th and 5th grade classes that visited the library learned why it's important to check information before believing or sharing it. They also learned how to use the S.I.F.T. method to help identify credible sources.

Kindergarten and first grade students are learning about balancing screen time with activities that don't involve screens. Second and third graders learned the importance of checking information before believing it and practiced tips for finding information online.

Students in 2nd–5th grade are encouraged to keep building their digital citizenship and media literacy skills by completing the TypingClub challenge!

Coming Up

In November, we'll kick off a new monthly Cultural Reading Challenge for Native American Heritage Month. Students, teachers, and parents can pick up a reading challenge in the library. Also, keep an eye out for our first fall Sora reading challenge!

Students who complete the challenges will have a chance to be featured on the morning announcements and earn a prize from the library!

Mrs. Larpenteur recommends reading Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard. (Don't forget to check out the recipe in the back!) Happy reading!!
