Vega Elementary Library Checkout Policies

Our goal is to help every student develop a love of reading while ensuring books are available for everyone to enjoy.

Student Checkout

• Kindergarten: Students check out one book at the beginning of the school year. Once they are comfortable caring for library books and following checkout routines, they may check out two books.

• Grades 1–5: Students may check out two books at a time.

• Research Projects: Students working on a classroom research project may check out one additional book related to their topic with teacher approval.

Checkout limits are subject to change based on student and campus needs.

Family Checkout

Parents and guardians are welcome to check out library books, too! Families may check out up to 5 books at a time to enjoy reading together at home.

Digital Books

Students have access to our digital library through Sora and may borrow up to three eBooks or audiobooks at a time. Digital books are available anytime, anywhere using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

We encourage students to read every day and take good care of library materials so everyone can enjoy them!

Lost and Damaged Books

We understand that accidents happen! Our goal is to keep our library collection in great condition so all students can enjoy it.

• Overdue Books: Library books are automatically marked as lost after they have been overdue for 60 days. At that time, a replacement fine will be added to the student's account.

• Returned Lost Books: If a book is returned after a lost-book fine has been added, the fine will be removed.

• Damaged Books: Books that are damaged beyond normal wear and tear may incur a replacement fine.

How Do I Pay for a Lost or Damaged Library Book?

You can send the payment to school with your child, or pay through My School Bucks. Your child will receive a receipt upon payment. To access My School Bucks, use the MySchoolBucks mobile app, go to https://www.myschoolbucks.com/. Register for a free account if you have not done so previously. If you have any questions about your MySchoolBucks account, contact MySchoolBucks directly: parentsupport@myschoolbucks.com . Unfortunately, we are unable to accept replacement books.

Book Replacements

To help keep our library collection consistent and durable, we are unable to accept replacement copies purchased by families in place of paying a replacement fine.

Library books are specially made to withstand many years of use by hundreds of students. They also require library processing, including protective covers, labels, and barcodes, so they can be checked out and shelved correctly. Because of these additional costs and materials, replacement fines allow us to purchase and prepare a library-quality copy for our collection.

When Do Students Come to the Library?

The Vega library operates on a hybrid fixed and flexible schedule, which allows Mrs. Larpenteur to teach lessons on a variety of topics, including print and media literacy, STEAM, book care, circulation and book searches, educational technology, digital citizenship, and host makerspace sessions.

When Mrs. Larpenteur is away from the library, the library may be closed or open for teacher-led checkout. During teacher-led checkout, classes may visit to check out and return books under the supervision of their classroom teacher, but library lessons, makerspace and other library services may not be available.

The library is open to students and parents at 7:45, and during the school day. Parents are welcome to visit the library with their child!

McKinney Public Library System

The library doesn't stop at school! We encourage all Vega families to explore everything the McKinney Public Library System has to offer. With a library card, families can borrow books, eBooks, audiobooks, movies, and more, as well as enjoy free programs, storytimes, STEM activities, reading challenges, and special events throughout the year.
