August 15, 2025
Dear Lion Family,
It’s been a joy to welcome our Lions back to campus this week! As with any new school year, there have been some adjustments—new schedules, routines, and rules—but we’re incredibly proud of how smoothly our students are handling the transition and can tell this is going to be an amazing year!
Accountability Rating
We’re proud to share that McKinney High School has earned an “A” rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), with an overall score of 91.
According to the TEA, this rating reflects both how much students are learning each year and how well they are being prepared for the next grade level. It also evaluates how effectively schools prepare students for life after high school—whether that’s college, the workforce, or military service.
In addition to the “A” rating, McKinney High School earned five out of seven prestigious Distinction Designations from the TEA, recognizing excellence in the following areas:
Academic Achievement in Mathematics
Academic Achievement in Social Studies
Top 25% in Comparative Academic Growth
Postsecondary Readiness
Top 25% in Closing Performance Gaps
We are incredibly proud of this achievement and deeply grateful for the dedication and hard work of our students, staff, and community over the past few years that made this recognition possible. To explore our full accountability report, visit txschools.gov.
MCJROTC Named Naval Honor School
We are proud to announce that McKinney High School’s MCJROTC program has been designated a Naval Honor School for the 2024–2025 school year—placing us in the top 10% of MCJROTC programs nationwide.
This distinguished recognition is awarded based on exceptional cadet achievement across multiple areas, including academics, leadership, community service, drill, marksmanship, physical fitness, and overall program excellence.
This honor is a testament to the dedication of our cadets, the leadership of our instructors, and the continued support from our families and school community.
Thank you for being part of our mission to develop the next generation of model citizens!
Thank You for a Smooth Start!
Kudos to our students and families for quickly adapting to the new school start time, increased traffic, and the Evolv security system! Thanks to everyone’s cooperation and early arrivals, we were able to have all lines cleared by 7:17 a.m. today—an impressive accomplishment so early in the year.
To support a smooth transition, we did not count tardies this week. However, beginning Monday, tardies will be recorded. Any student arriving late will need to stop by a tardy station or their house office to receive a pass before going to class.
Adapting to the New State Law on Personal Electronic Devices
We are incredibly proud of how well our students have adapted to the new state law prohibiting personal electronic devices during the school day. From the moment students enter the building until the final bell at 2:40 p.m., devices must remain turned off and stowed out of sight. This policy is being strictly enforced, and we’re pleased to report that our Lions have truly risen to the occasion.
With nearly 2,600 students on campus each of the past four days, only 42 devices have been confiscated all week—a remarkable testament to our students’ responsibility and respect for the rules.
We’re also seeing some exciting positive outcomes: more face-to-face socializing, increased classroom engagement, and students reading more during downtime. It’s already clear that this change is contributing to a more focused and connected learning environment.
We appreciate the cooperation of our students and families and are confident that this shift will lead to even greater academic achievement in the year ahead.
A Reminder About Device Monitoring and Online Activity
IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ:
We want to remind all students that online activity on MISD-issued devices is closely monitored by the district’s Deledao system.
Each day, our team receives reports of any potentially concerning online behavior, including:
Threats
Mentions of self-harm
Toxic or inappropriate language
Profanity or sexually explicit language
Comments or phrases that may be interpreted as bullying
Please be aware that the system is highly sensitive, and we are required to follow up on every alert.
It’s essential that students use their devices responsibly. All searches, messages, and online communication should remain professional, respectful, and school-appropriate ("G-rated") at all times.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and positive digital learning environment for everyone.
MHS is a Closed Campus
Students are not permitted to leave the school building during lunch or at any other time during the day unless they are checked out through their house office. If a student needs to return to their car during the day, they must first obtain a pass from the front office before exiting the building.
Parking Permits
A parking permit is required for any student who parks a vehicle on school property. To be eligible for a parking permit, students must:
Have paid all outstanding fines and fees
Hold a valid driver’s license
Be listed on the vehicle’s insurance policy
Once these requirements are met, follow these steps to obtain a permit:
Complete the Parking Permit Request Google Form
Pay the $75 fee through MySchoolBucks
Bring proof of payment to pick up your permit
Information About Library Access
Our campus is committed to providing parents with easy and efficient access to our online library catalog. The Destiny online library catalog is available anytime through the parent SSO portal.
In response to Senate Bill 13, we are now enabling automatic email notifications to inform parents of any checkout activity their student has during the school day. Additionally, S.B. 13 grants parents the right to block access to specific titles within the Destiny catalog for their student.
If you would like to view your student’s checked-out items, review their checkout history, or block access to specific books, please visit the Parent Library Access Tool page on the MISD Library Services website.

August 6, 2025

Each week, we’ll send updates with celebrations, important information, and upcoming events—typically at the end of the week. We’re sending this message a bit early to make sure you have everything you need to start the year strong. This week’s update is longer than usual because it covers many frequently asked questions about our procedures. Please take a few moments to review the details below.
📅 School Hours and Morning Drop-off Procedures
Doors open: 6:50 AM
Security Checkpoint: All students must show their student ID and pass through the Evolve Security Station. We recommend arriving by 7:00 AM to ensure plenty of time to get through security and to class on time.

School ends: 2:40 PM
⛔ Expect heavier traffic during the first few days of school. Please plan accordingly.
Drop-off locations:
Parent drop-off: Front of the building

🔒 Quick Tips to Get Through Security Faster
Help students avoid delays at the security station by:
Organizing backpacks to avoid setting off alerts (e.g., keep umbrellas, metal deodorant/perfume bottles, and clustered spiral notebooks separate)
Keeping phones, chargers, and keys inside backpacks (these typically do not trigger the system)
When issued, school laptops must be passed outside the system
Personal laptops should be left at home

Schedule Pickup (Aug. 8)
9th Grade Orientation "Lion Call" (Aug. 9)

Students may purchase parking permits, yearbooks, and device protection plans after the school year begins.
📵 Communication During the School Day: What You Need to Know
As you may know, a new state law restricts student use of personal electronic devices during the instructional day. While we support its intent—to reduce distractions and support student well-being—we understand the adjustment this may require for families used to frequent and instantaneous communication with their children.
To help with the transition:
Students will receive a school-issued laptop on Wednesday, August 13
On Thursday, August 14, students will be taught how to use their school email account
We recommend parents give students email addresses they check frequently. Students will have access to their school email throughout the day.
📱 Personal Devices: New Expectations
Devices must be turned off and stored out of sight once students enter the building (starting at 6:50 AM)
Devices may not be used:
During class
Passing periods
Lunch
Devices may be used after school ends at 2:40 PM
Enforcement starts the first day of school. Please review consequences with your child:
Offense
Consequence
1st

3rd

Students with documented accommodations (e.g., for diabetes) may still use devices as outlined in their plans. Please help us have a smooth start to the school year by discussing the new procedures with your child in advance and setting the expectation to comply with the rules.
📝 Testing Accommodations
If your child needs accommodations for PSAT, SAT, AP, or ACT testing due to a documented disability, please ensure requests are submitted before the deadline.

Parent Consent for Student Club Participation
At McKinney ISD, one of our top priorities is making sure every student feels connected and has opportunities to get involved. We know that when students find activities, clubs, and organizations they enjoy, they build stronger relationships, feel a greater sense of belonging, and are more engaged in school. In accordance with Senate Bill 12, McKinney ISD requires parent approval for students to participate in any student club or organization. All student clubs and organizations must comply with district guidelines and state law.
Please use this MHS Clubs and Organizations Parent Consent Form to provide or deny permission for your child to participate in student clubs at our school.
By working together, we can make sure every student finds a place to belong and thrive.

Offense
Consequence
1st
Device held until end of day
2nd
Parent pick-up + detention
3rd
Parent pick-up + conference + ISS
Students with documented accommodations (e.g., for diabetes) may still use devices as outlined in their plans. Please help us have a smooth start to the school year by discussing the new procedures with your child in advance and setting the expectation to comply with the rules.
