School and Community
Located just 30 miles north of downtown Dallas, McKinney is a picturesque city with a small town feel. McKinney serves as the county seat of Collin County. Founded in 1848 to educate the children of local farmers and small business owners, McKinney schools have been a focal point of our community for over 150 years. Although the world has changed dramatically since McKinney saw its first settlers, the importance of a strong educational system that provides children with skills to be productive citizens in our community remains a top priority in our community.
Currently, McKinney has a population of nearly approximately 218,000 and is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. Graduating its first class in 1889, McKinney High School is the original of 3 public high schools in McKinney and serves diverse student population of approximately 2,750 students in grades 9-12. McKinney ISD serves students in the city of McKinney, as well as students in parts of New Hope, Allen, Fairview, Princeton, Lucas, and Lowry Crossing.
The building underwent a full renovation during the summer of 2013 updating the building facade, infrastructure, and technology in order to better reflect the quality of education that takes place within the building. The building was further expanded in 2015 when additional classrooms, career and technology programs, and the MHS Lynn Sperry Performing Arts Center was added to the campus.
Academics
The school year is divided into two semesters, each consisting of two 9-week grading periods. Each academic day is comprised of seven 50-minute class periods. MHS offers a variety of courses, detailed in the MISD Academic Planning Guide.
