Counselor’s Corner

Character Education

Throughout the school year, students will explore and develop important character traits, including Respect, Responsibility, Citizenship, Empathy, Fairness, Honesty and Trustworthiness. At Burks Elementary, we are committed to helping every student build strong character—qualities that shape who they are and who they will become. Students will also participate in lessons focused on Integrity, Stress and Anxiety Management, Positive Relationships, and Personal Safety, equipping them with valuable life skills both inside and outside the classroom.

Burks Lives Kind!

McKinney ISD proudly promotes kindness through the MISD Lives Kind!initiative. Kindness is the expression of acceptance and appreciation that inspires positive actions. It grows through essential skills such as collaboration, active listening, self-regulation and coping skills, empathy, and speaking with positive intention.

Throughout the year, students will participate in monthly CASES lessons led by their teachers and school counselor, learning what it means to live with kindness every day. "Burks Lives Kind" is more than a theme—it's a shared commitment that connects our students, staff, and families.

There are many ways to be part of the Burks Lives Kind movement, including performing random acts of kindness, volunteering time, donating needed items, or participating in school clubs and service projects. Families and teachers are encouraged to share photos of students demonstrating kindness with their homeroom teacher or Ms. Doyle. These moments may be featured on the Burks Lives Kind Shout Out during Good Morning Burks (GMB), our monthly pep rally.

At the end of the school year, our Superintendent, Mr. Shawn Pratt, recognizes outstanding students as MISD Lives Kind Student Champions. Teachers may nominate students who consistently go above and beyond in demonstrating kindness and making a positive impact within our school community.
