2027 Class Announced for MISD Athletics Hall of Honor

McKINNEY--Seven individuals and one team will join the McKinney ISD Athletics Hall of Honor next year.

The 2027 class includes Kirk Crum in the Senior Era, Jania Martin, Adam Miller, and Becky Nye in the Modern Era, Angela Hamm in the Legends category, Jim Gatewood in the Coach category, Shawn Pratt in the Contributor category, and the 2014 McKinney North High School girls basketball team.

The group will be officially inducted in January 2027 as the thirteenth class since the Hall of Honor was established in 2013.

A pioneer in the early days of women’s athletics at McKinney High School, Hamm starred on the tennis court in the early 1970s. Partnered with Shaunna Mitchell in doubles competition, Hamm completed an undefeated regular season while capturing the district and regional championships—the first in school history—before falling to the defending state champions at the state meet in Austin.

Crum captured a state title in the 800 meters for McKinney High School in 1984, becoming just the second runner in school history to accomplish the feat. His state championship winning time of 1:51.9 remains the school record. Crum went on to compete at TCU and currently serves as the director of quality control for a hotel furniture manufacturer.

Martin was an integral part of the McKinney North girls track and field program, leading the Bulldogs to back-to-back state championships while capturing three gold medals and two silver medals across the 2017 and 2018 state meets. She continued her athletic career at Texas A&M and the University of Kentucky, earning All-American honors in both the 200 meters and the 4x400-meter relay.

A 2003 graduate of McKinney High School, Miller was one of the most decorated pitchers in Lions baseball history. As a senior, he posted a 10-2 record with a 0.48 ERA and 128 strikeouts. Drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft by Cleveland, Miller enjoyed an 11-year professional baseball career.

Nye set the standard for McKinney North softball, finishing her prep career as one of the most dominant pitchers in school history while establishing program records for career wins, strikeouts, and ERA. She went on to pitch at Ole Miss, where she threw the first no-hitter in program history and earned SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition three times.

Gatewood spent 19 years as the head baseball coach at McKinney North High School, leading the Bulldogs to 15 playoff appearances and capped his tenure with a state semifinal berth in his final season. Gatewood, who passed away recently, leaves behind a legacy defined by his mentorship and impact on the lives of his student-athletes both on and off the field.

Pratt has served McKinney ISD for 33 years across a wide range of roles. Beginning his career as a student teacher, Pratt went on to serve as an assistant coach and teacher, the first-ever head football coach at McKinney North High School, and the district’s athletic director. He has served as the superintendent of schools for McKinney ISD since March 2023.

The 2014 McKinney North High School girls basketball team completed an undefeated district schedule en route to a run to the Class 4A state championship game. The Bulldogs earned playoff victories over Mount Pleasant, Arlington Seguin, Frisco Liberty, and The Colony before defeating San Antonio Brennan in dramatic fashion in the state semifinals.

Induction into the Athletic Hall of Honor is the highest honor awarded in McKinney ISD Athletics. The Hall of Honor was established in 2013 to recognize former student-athletes, coaches, teams, and community contributors who have made a significant contribution to McKinney ISD Athletics.
