McKINNEY, Texas—Six individuals and one team will become the newest members of the McKinney ISD Athletic Hall of Honor.
The 2024 Class includes David Watts and Adrian Martinez (Senior Era), Sammie Hashbarger and Justin Madubuike (Modern Era), the late Dudley Wysong Jr. (Legends), the late Jerry Crumpton (Coach), and McKinney North’s 2017 girls track and field team, becoming the tenth group to be added since the inception of the Hall of Honor.
The newest members will be officially inducted in January 2024.
Watts, a 1993 McKinney High School graduate, earned all-state honors as center for the Lions’ football team. He later played guard at Northeastern (Okla.) State and was part of its NAIA national championship team in 1994. Since his playing days, Watts has enjoyed a successful career as an oil and gas executive.
A 1996 MHS graduate, Martinez won the Class 4A cross country title as a senior after finishing runner-up in his junior season. He continued his track career at TCU, where he still ranks as one of the best in the 10,000 meters (third all time), 5,000 meters (eighth all time), and 3,000 meters (seventh all time).
Hashbarger, a 2014 McKinney High School graduate, was a three-time state champion in swimming, winning the 100-, 200-, and 500-meter freestyle individual golds. She holds six individual and two relay all-time program records at MHS. Hashbarger continued her competitive swim career at the University of Texas, where she was the 2015 Big 12 champion in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 500-meter freestyle.
A 2016 McKinney North High School graduate, Madubuike is a starting defensive tackle for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, who selected him 71st in the 2020 draft. At MNHS, he was a dominating force as an all-state defensive linemen, totaling 35 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks as a senior. He earned second-team all-SEC honors after his junior season at Texas A&M, where he led the team in tackles for loss, sacks, and quarterback hurries.
Wysong graduated from McKinney High School in 1957 and enjoyed a long-time career as an amateur and professional golfer. He lost to Jack Nicklaus in the finals of the 1961 U.S. Amateur and played on the PGA tour from 1963-1970, winning the Hawaiian Open in 1967. After his professional career, he served as the secretary for the PGA of America and, later, was head professional at country clubs in the McKinney area. He passed in 1998.
Crumpton coached in McKinney in two separate stints, coaching baseball for eight seasons and serving as Ron Poe’s offensive coordinator on the 1979 state football championship team. He returned to McKinney High School in 1994 and finished his coaching career at McKinney Boyd until retirement in 2021. He passed in May 2022.
McKinney North’s 2017 girls track and field squad not only repeated as Class 5A team champions, but did so with a meet record 98 points. Coach Jessica Richards’ team won gold in the 4×100- and 4×200-meter relays and was runner-up in the 4×400-meter relay. Adding to those performance were freshman London Culbreath’s sweep of the 1600 and 3200 meters and Jania Martin’s gold in the 400 meters and silver in the 200 meters.
Induction into the Athletic Hall of Honor is the highest honor awarded in McKinney ISD Athletics. The Hall of Honor was established in 2013 to recognize former student-athletes, coaches, teams, and community contributors who have made a significant contribution to McKinney ISD Athletics.
