Class of 2021

McKINNEY, Texas—Six individuals and one team have become the newest members of the McKinney ISD Athletic Hall of Honor.

The 2021 Class includes Rodney Haynes (Senior Era), Ronald Jones II and Zach Lee (Modern Era), Joe Simpson (Legends), Glenna Duncan (Coach), McKinney Boyd’s 2011 girls soccer (Team), and Al Alford (Contributor/Supporter), becoming the seventh group to be added since the inception of the Hall of Honor.

The group was officially inducted on January, 22, 2021.

Haynes, a 1984 McKinney High School graduate, was an all-state center for the Lions’ football team and a three-time all-district first baseman for the MHS baseball team. He played football at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he was named freshmen of the year before the school dropped football before his second season.

Jones, a 2015 McKinney North graduate, was an integral part of the Bulldogs’ historic playoff run in 2014 and finished his career as the school’s most prolific running back. He continued his career at USC, where he set the freshmen single-season rushing record. Jones is scheduled to begin his third season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Lee, a 2010 McKinney High School graduate, earned all-state honors in both football and baseball. He still holds the school record for career passing yards and passing TDs, as well as season passing TDs and the longest pass play. Lee turned down a football scholarship to LSU to pursue a baseball career. He is currently a member of the Oakland A’s organization.

Simpson was head football coach at McKinney High School in the 1950s and led the Lions to a 9-3-1 record and the state semifinals in 1958, the first year an MHS team had advanced that far.

Duncan helped start McKinney High School’s girls athletics program in 1976 as its first volleyball coach. She later took over the girls basketball coaching job and led the Lionettes to the state semifinals and a school record 31 wins in 1998.

The 2011 McKinney Boyd girls soccer team advanced to the 5A state finals, was unbeaten in 14 district matches, and finished the season with an impressive 28-1-1 record.

Alford, a 1948 graduate of the original Boyd High school, founded the McKinney Mavericks youth baseball program in 1971 and was instrumental in bringing the Mickey Mantle World Series to McKinney. Alford, a Hall of Fame collegiate baseball umpire for more than 30 years, died in February 2010.

Induction into the Athletic Hall of Honor is the highest honor awarded in McKinney ISD Athletics. The Hall of Honor was established in 2013 to recognize former student-athletes, coaches, teams, and community contributors who have made a significant contribution to McKinney ISD Athletics.
