MISD Earns Recognition for Excellence in Financial Reporting from GFOA for Second Consecutive Year

McKinney, Texas – The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded McKinney ISD the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 2017.

It’s the second consecutive year that the district has received the award, which is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting that is granted by GFOA. The honor comes in response to the district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) that was submitted to the Texas Education Agency and to GFOA last year.

The district’s CAFR was first reviewed by an independent auditor and then, after submission to GFOA, was assessed by an impartial panel of financial professionals. They concluded that the document meets the high standards of their program and reflects a spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate the district’s financial story.

TEA requires that each public school district file an Annual Financial Report (AFR), but the CAFR is a voluntarily created document that goes beyond the scope of the AFR and contains some 50 additional pages of statistical data.

“This is our second year to earn this recognition from GFOA,” said MISD Executive Director of Finance Marlene Harbeson. “We are continuing to take extra steps for transparency purposes, so that the community can access even more detailed information from us. So, we are very pleased that we received the Certificate of Excellence Award again. It’s really an honor.”
