MISD Earns Highest Recognition for Accounting and Financial Reporting from GFOA for Sixth Consecutive Year

McKinney, Texas – The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded McKinney ISD the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 2021, the most recent year evaluated by the organization.

It’s the sixth consecutive year that the district has received the award, which is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting that is granted by GFOA. The honor comes in response to the district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) that was submitted to the Texas Education Agency and to GFOA last year.

“We always strive to keep our community informed,” said MISD Chief Financial Officer Marlene Harbeson. “The GFOA recognition is an indicator of our success in that endeavor, and the district is proud to receive this award for the sixth year in a row. It’s a testament to the dedication of our staff and the district’s commitment to excellence and transparency.”

The district’s CAFR was first reviewed by an independent auditor and, after submission to GFOA, was then assessed by an impartial panel of financial professionals who concluded that the document meets the high standards of their program and reflects a spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate the district’s financial story.

TEA requires that each public school district file an Annual Financial Report (AFR), but the CAFR is a voluntarily created document that goes beyond the scope of the AFR and contains some 50 additional pages of statistical data.
