McKinney, Texas – McKinney ISD students taking part in Advanced Placement (AP) exams in the spring of 2021 earned accolades from the College Board for their performance, with 701 students from McKinney Boyd High School, McKinney High School and McKinney North High School receiving recognition.

Among the three MISD high schools, 383 students earned AP Scholar recognition, 104 were AP Scholars with Honor and 214 were named AP Scholars with Distinction.

In addition, Ethan Bickel, a junior at McKinney High School, earned a perfect score on the AP Computer Science A exam, placing him among the top .5 percent (half of one percent) of the 63,980 AP test-takers for that exam worldwide.

McKinney High School junior Ethan Bickel earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Computer Science A Exam.

At a lunch reception in celebration of Ethan’s achievement, MHS Calculus and AP Computer Science teacher Theresa Horvath explained, “A lot of times we hear about students that score 5’s. And, actually 25 percent of the students—that’s about 16,000 of them—scored a 5 [on the Computer Science exam], which is awesome and amazing, but only 345 … got a perfect score.”

AP courses and exams allow students to challenge themselves, develop critical thinking skills through rigorous and relevant coursework, explore their interests and create an opportunity for students to earn college credit. The annual exams are scored on a five-point scale, and the AP Scholar Awards recognize students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement on the tests.

For 2021, MISD students earned recognition in three categories.

—AP Scholar—receives scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams
—AP Scholar with Honor—receives an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams
—AP Scholar with Distinction—receives an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of those exams

(Note: The National AP Scholar Award, which is typically earned by a number of MISD AP students each year, was discontinued this year by the College Board.)

“I am always impressed with the talent and dedication of our MISD AP teachers and students at all three of our high schools,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Rick McDaniel. “Ethan’s perfect score on the AP Computer Science exam and the honors earned by hundreds of MISD students for their performance on AP exams underscore why we are committed to offering Advanced Placement classes. This success sets them up for further success at the collegiate level.”
