Sperry Performance Hall is dedicated at the brand new McKinney High School Performing Arts Center on January 31, 2019.
On Jan. 31, 2019, a new era dawned in McKinney High School fine arts as the district officially opened the brand-new, 1,000 seat MHS Performing Arts Center. District officials also unveiled the Sperry Performance Hall, named in honor of longtime member of the Board of Trustees, Lynn Sperry, and her husband Neil for their staunch support of MISD fine arts. And, the MHS production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” enjoyed a near-capacity audience that night followed by two sold out performances to round out a highly successful three-show run.
McKinney ISD would like to say thanks to NBC 5’s Wayne Carter for this great story on our MISD aviation program! He visited with some of our aviation students who are currently building a plane from the ground up — and went up in the plane that they built last year! You can watch Wayne’s report here. He also visited the aviation classroom at MHS, and you can watch that story here.
The role of school counselor is never an easy one. But, some days can be a bit more challenging than others. Press Elementary Counselor Susan Washa knows this firsthand. One day, she spent more than two hours with a student after the student took their frustrations out on Washa’s office space. Even so, there was no complaint in Washa’s voice as she talked about it, “The student was calm and happy when they left, so that was rewarding,” she said. “A few days later, the same student came up and gave me a high five and said they couldn't wait to see me.” While not typical, such situations are part of the job, and they offer a glimpse into the sometimes unpredictable day-to-day experience for Washa who, in the spring of 2018, was named McKinney ISD’s Counselor of the Year.
MEF and McKinney ISD officials made their annual rounds on Friday, Dec. 7 to deliver grant awards totaling $115,000 to 52 MISD teachers and media resource specialists.
On Monday, Nov. 26 and Tuesday, Nov. 27, Wolford Elementary held its annual Diversity Days event to help all of its students better understand the challenges faced by their peers who live with disabilities. By doing so, Wolford has laid a solid foundation for understanding, compassion and kindness among its students.
During the month of January we take the opportunity to appreciate our school board and thank them for their service to our district. Here's a sampling of the people and places our board of trustees have visited this past year or so.
