This fall, officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of 17 McKinney ISD seniors whose results on the 2019 PSAT/NMSQT have earned them recognition as Commended Scholars and eight who have earned the title of National Merit Semifinalist. In addition, the College Board announced the names of four MISD seniors who have earned distinction in the National African American Recognition Program and three who have earned recognition in the National Hispanic Recognition Program for their exceptional performance on the exam.

Three McKinney ISD schools will welcome new leadership in the coming days as Jennifer Harrison has been named principal of McClure Elementary, Holly Rogers will transition to the principal position at Scott Johnson Middle School and Mitch VandenBoom has been named principal of Faubion Middle School.

On Wednesday, October 14, the NCAA announced that it has extended McKinney ISD Stadium’s run as the host site for the Division II National Football Championship through 2025. The announcement is in line with the NCAA’s decision last March to keep the championship at MISD Stadium through 2021. Now, the NCAA has chosen the district’s beautiful, 12,000 seat venue to host the Division II title game an additional four years.

Two stuffed animals from Glen Oaks Elementary have been tackling serious topics with the students, like COVID-19 and lockdown drills. The fluffy school mascots gained their voices from their principals, who provide both playful personality and reassuring emotions in their delivery.

Minshew Elementary and Reuben Johnson Elementary are the sites of a McKinney ISD reading pilot program prompted by state mandate that calls for every Texas kindergarten through third grade teacher to complete an intensive 60-hour Reading Academy.

McKinney ISD officials announced that the district received a rating of “Superior” under Texas’ Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system. It’s the 18th consecutive year that MISD has earned the highest possible FIRST rating.

Both the McKinney Boyd Honors Consortium Orchestra and the McKinney High School Symphony Orchestra earned National Winner status in the String Orchestra and Full Orchestra categories, respectively, in the national 2020 Mark of Excellence competition.
