A Legacy of Excellence: Boyd Orchestra and Cockrill Band Earn National Recognition (Again!)
The McKinney Boyd Consortium Orchestra and the Cockrill Honors Band were each named 2017 Mark of Excellence National Winners by the Foundation for Music Education. The awards highlight the legacy of excellence in McKinney ISD Fine Arts—a legacy that each group is doing their part to preserve.
American Airlines On Board with MISD Aviation Program
The McKinney ISD Aviation Academy is soaring with more than 200 students in the program and support from partners like LeTourneau University, Monarch Air, McKinney National Airport and Southwest Airlines. Now, American Airlines has come on board as a partner, and the program is sure to soar even higher.
MISD Names New Sr. Director of Special Populations
McKinney ISD has hired Adrienne Morris as its new senior director of special populations. Morris, an educator of 23 years, comes to MISD from Melissa ISD where she has served as director of special education for the past five years.
Now in its Fourth Year, MISD 1:the World Initiative Rolls On
Three years ago, MISD introduced its 1:the World initiative that put a MacBook Air laptop in the hands of every MISD high school freshman. Now, those freshmen are seniors, and since that initial deployment, every successive freshman class in the district has received a MacBook to use throughout their four years of high school.
10 MISD Campuses Earn National Healthy Schools Awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation
Ten McKinney ISD schools earned national recognition and Healthy School Awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for their success in promoting healthy habits among their students and staff. They were among only 323 of the 31,000 schools that participated in the Healthy Schools Program last year named to the list of America’s Healthiest Schools.

SJMS is 1 of 26 Schools Nationally to Retain Designation as an NASSP Breakthrough School
In 2013, Scott Johnson Middle School was one of only 10 schools across the country designated as a Breakthrough School by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) for their success at fostering collaborative leadership and performance growth as well as reducing achievement gaps on state assessments. This year, SJMS was re-designated as a Breakthrough School for their continued success in those areas over the past four years.

After back-to-back state track championships, McKinney North High School Girls Track Coach Jessica Richards has been chosen as the 2017 Texas Girls High School Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross country Coaches Association.
Press Elementary Teacher Whitney Sellars Named Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year
Press Elementary fourth grade teacher Whitney Sellars has been chosen as the Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made on Thursday, August 3 at the Region 10 Teacher of the Year Awards luncheon held at the Curtis Culwell Event Center in Garland.
MISD Upgrades School Bus Fleet with A/C and Additional Security Cameras
In the spring of 2016, McKinney ISD and Durham Transportation began a two-phase project to outfit the MISD bus fleet with air conditioners and new additional security cameras. Now nearing the conclusion of phase two, the project is scheduled for completion before school starts on August 28.
