MISD Board Secretary Stephanie O’Dell Finds Fun and Fitness in New P.E. Curriculum
For those of us who grew up long, long ago the term “P.E.” tends to evoke memories of dubious activities like dodgeball, where we learned to be tough by enduring a stinging hail of red rubber balls—and we learned to be fast by fleeing them. But, thankfully, physical education has come a long way since then.
McKinney North Symphonic Band Earns State Recognition From Foundation for Music Education
Solos performed on the alto flute and the recorder don’t often attract the spotlight among a lot of high school bands. But, in the case of the McKinney North High School Symphonic Band, those two instruments were featured in an award-winning performance that has received state recognition from the Foundation for Music Education. The foundation awarded the group a Citation of Excellence Award for their performance on that piece—“The Journey of Yan Si Meng” by composer Gabriel Musella—and another selection called “Blue and Green Music” by Samuel Hazo.
SJMS Principal Mitch Curry Named TASSP Region 10 Outstanding Principal of the Year
Principal Mitch Curry strides along the yellow center line of the drop-off lane at Scott Johnson Middle School, guiding the dual lines of traffic slowly forward. He raises a hand, and the crawl of vehicles eases to a stop as Curry waves a group of students through the crosswalk. He greets them by name as they pass, shaking hands, offering high fives and engaging them in conversation.

The end of the school year is typically accompanied by a tremendous whooshing sound as students race out the doors toward summer fun and relaxation. But for eight McKinney High School students, the start of summer just meant that they would have more time to focus on training.
MISD Board Approves 5 Cent Tax Rate Reduction
In April, McKinney ISD announced a larger than anticipated tax rate reduction of 4.5 cents. Now, after receiving the Collin County Appraisal District’s certified property values reports in July—which exceed the estimated values reports of this past spring—the district is announcing an additional half cent reduction in the tax rate for a total tax rate decrease of 5 cents.
2016-17 Brings New Faces and New Spaces Among MISD Leadership
With the 2016–2017 school year only a couple of days away, Central Office curriculum coordinators and campus principals across McKinney ISD are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the return of students. Working alongside them are some new associate and assistant principals who play an indispensable role in campus leadership teams. Among both groups are a few new faces—and in some cases, familiar faces in new roles.
McKinney PD Teen Academy Advanced Course Takes Summer Vacation to a New Level
This is the McKinney P.D. Advanced Teen Academy—new for 2016—and it’s summer vacation on a completely different level. The 20 or so middle school students taking part have all completed the Basic class offered last year and earlier this summer. Today, they’re learning the proper way to search a building, and for now, it’s a reasonably relaxed environment.
