MISD Names New Director of Safety, Security and Transportation

McKinney ISD has hired Robert Montgomery to serve as the district’s new director of safety, security and transportation. Montgomery comes to MISD from Allen ISD where he has served as safety and security specialist since 2013. In addition to his experience in school safety, Montgomery has also served in the private sector and for 18 years as a police officer.

Forging Ahead in a Cardboard Boat: MHS Engineering Students Make Waves at Texas TSA State Leadership Conference

Officers from the MHS Engineering Club attended the Texas Technology Student Association State Leadership conference in Kerrville Nov. 30–Dec. 2 to hone their leadership skills. Along the way, three members of the team made an inspiring journey across the length of a swimming pool in a cardboard boat.

Dowell, Faubion, Boyd and MHS Students Shine in Youth & Government District 5 Competition

Twenty-nine McKinney ISD middle and high school students earned honors at the 2017 YMCA Youth and Government District 5 Conference held at Duncanville High School in November. Dowell student Davis Winn was chosen as the District 5 candidate for governor and will represent District 5 in the Youth and Government gubernatorial election at the state conference in February. Boyd’s Mckenzy Smith earned the president pro tempore candidacy in the high school competition and will run for that office at the conference for high school students in January.

MISD Gifted and Talented Coordinator Karen Green didn’t set out for a career in education, but along the way this “accidental educator”—as she describes herself—found her purpose serving gifted and talented students. Now, she has been awarded the 2017 Administrator of the Gifted Award by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented.

Answering the Call: 2017 Plano Community Forum Educator Award Highlights Sonja Harrison’s Heart for Kids

McKinney ISD’s Sonja Harrison answered the call, just as she’s done in the lives of many other students. After Return from Deployment, Malvern Assistant Principal Gilbert Salinas Joins Students in Honoring Fellow Veterans

Only a few months into his tenure as assistant principal of Malvern Elementary, Gilbert Salinas was called up for a six-month Air Force deployment to Africa. Now back at his post at Malvern, Salinas took part in honoring his fellow veterans in the Malvern community on Veterans Day—and thanked Malvern for their show of support to his family during in his absence.

54 MISD Seniors Earn National Merit and College Board Recognition

In 2016, McKinney ISD students were among the 1.6 million juniors across the country who took the PSAT/NMSQT© which served as an initial screen of entrants in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Now seniors, 28 of those MISD students have earned Commended Scholar recognition for their performance on the test, and 12 have been named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. In addition, the College Board has recognized 16 MISD students in the National Hispanic Recognition Program based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.
