Area School Boards Unite Behind Educational Legislative Priorities
The McKinney ISD School Board unanimously approved a resolution at its monthly meeting on Dec. 14, 2016, outlining their top legislative priorities entering the 2017 Texas Legislative Session.
MISD to Officially Break Ground on New Stadium and Event Center
Officials from McKinney ISD and the City of McKinney will gather along with student and staff representatives from each of the district’s three high schools on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 9 a.m. to officially break ground at the site of the new MISD Stadium and Event Center.
JJAEP Assistant Principal Grace Harris to be New AP at SJMS
The quickly approaching new year will bring new surroundings for Assistant Principal Grace Harris. Currently serving at the McKinney Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Placement (JJAEP), Harris will join Dr. Mitch Curry, principal, and Assistant Principal David Warren to round out the administrative leadership at Scott Johnson Middle School when school resumes after the holiday break. She’ll fill the position that will be vacated with the December retirement of Dr. Robert Waite, current SJMS assistant principal.
New Assistant Principal Chosen for Slaughter Elementary
Slaughter Elementary has chosen veteran elementary educator Marina Byrd as the school’s new assistant principal. Byrd is no stranger to Slaughter; she has served there as a bilingual instructional coach for the past three years, and with 23 years in elementary education behind her, she brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new position.
NASA Contracts with MHS Engineering Students to Build an 8 Foot Rocket for National Competition
The McKinney High School Flying Lions Rocketry Team has been awarded an eight-month unfunded NASA contract to design, build and launch a reusable high powered rocket and engineering payload to an altitude of one mile above ground level and recover both.
Echegaray Named Principal of Finch Elementary
Veteran Slaughter Elementary School Assistant Principal Erika Echegaray has been chosen as the new principal of Finch Elementary. The decision was announced at the McKinney ISD Board of Trustees monthly work study meeting Tuesday night. Echegaray brings eight years of administrative experience to her new role.
MISD Interdisciplinary Study and Mentorship Program Sets Students on a Trajectory for Success as They Pursue College and Career
It’s a Friday afternoon, and the energetic buzz of some 40 or so conversations hovers over the main conference room at the Collin College Higher Education Center. A bell rings, and half the room stands and shifts to the next small table in line. There are handshakes and greetings, and then everyone is seated again, and the buzz of conversation returns. This is the 2016 McKinney ISD Business Symposium, and it is an important component of the MISD high school Interdisciplinary Study and Mentorship (ISM) Program. Perhaps best described as an afternoon of intensive speed-interviewing, the symposium will give each of the students in attendance an opportunity to hone their communication skills while sitting across from McKinney professionals from a wide range of industries and disciplines.

Since childhood, McKinney High School German teacher Sandra Dieckman’s love of the German language has been rooted in the fertile soil of family ties. But, it was a youthful inclination to sidestep authority that helped it bloom.
63 MISD Seniors Earn National Merit and College Board Recognition
Last fall, approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools sat down to take the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT©) which served as an initial screen of entrants in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Those students are, of course, seniors now, and this month, officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of 34 McKinney ISD students whose outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT earned Commended Scholar recognition and 10 who have been named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Boyd AP Teacher Receives 2016 Yale Educator Award
The Yale University Office of Undergraduate Admissions announced last Monday that McKinney Boyd High School AP social studies teacher Scott Martin has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 Yale Educator Award.
McKinney ISD Named a 2016 Best Place to Work by Dallas Business Journal
McKinney ISD has been named a 2016 “Best Place to Work” by the Dallas Business Journal and is the only school district to make the list this year.
