In the event of inclement winter weather, McKinney ISD utilizes a number of communication avenues to notify parents, students and staff of school cancellation or delay.

McKinney, Texas – It’s that time of year again when the possibility of inclement winter weather—however rare it may be in North Central Texas—looms large in local forecasts. So, it’s important to know where to look for accurate information in the event of a McKinney ISD closing or delayed start.

(Note: If a closing or delayed start is necessary, it will apply to both in-person and virtual learners.)

During bad weather, the district makes every attempt to assess road conditions and notify staff and students as early as possible. The goal is 5:30 a.m. However, there have been cases in which the weather worsened during the morning hours, and a decision was made slightly later than the 5:30 a.m. goal.

Please keep in mind that MISD will not send out or post notification to confirm school is in session. Parents, employees and students should assume a normal school day unless notified otherwise.

The district utilizes several communication methods to notify parents, students and staff of a closing or delay. One of those methods is the SchoolMessenger automated phone calling system. If you recently changed phone numbers and have not notified the district, please make certain your information is accurate by contacting the registrar at your child’s campus.

In addition to a callout, the district posts information on the MISD Facebook page and Twitter page as well as the MISD website homepage (www.mckinneyisd.net). The district will also send out an email notification and notify local television and radio outlets.

For quickest access to MISD closing or delay information, parents should not rely solely on the phone call from the district. The MISD Facebook and Twitter accounts are the first places information is updated, while the MISD website homepage, SchoolMessenger and MISD emails are generally the second wave of communication received. Television network updates are typically last (because there is often lag time between when the information is sent and when it is posted).

If you have internet access, the district’s Facebook and Twitter accounts are the quickest, most efficient way to find information on school closings.

So, if we do encounter one of those rare winter weather events celebrated by children everywhere—the quasi-legendary “snow day”—everyone will know where, and when, to expect information from MISD.
