Dr. Ebonee King—New Principal of Valley Creek Elementary

McKinney, Texas – When the 2021–2022 school year wraps up in just over a month, Dr. Ebonee King will begin the transition to a new campus and a new leadership role in McKinney ISD. On Tuesday night, at the April meeting of the MISD Board of Trustees, the district announced that King will be the new principal of Valley Creek Elementary.

The change in leadership at Valley Creek follows the retirement announcement of longtime Valley Creek Principal Megan Richards. King, who has served as assistant principal at the MISD Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) for the past two years, brings a broad range of experience and expertise forged over the course of a 22-year career—including 16 years in MISD.

“We are very excited about Ebonee moving into the principal position at Valley Creek,” said Suzy Woodard, MISD Assistant Principal of Elementary Student Support. “She has a very diverse background in education, having served students in special education, gifted and talented and students with behavior needs. Ebonee is going to be a great addition for Valley Creek.”

King began her career in 2000 in Plano ISD as a first grade teacher and ESL coordinator. Six years later, she arrived in MISD to serve as a classroom teacher at Malvern Elementary, and since then, her work in the district has been far-reaching.

At Malvern she taught every grade level except kindergarten and served in various leadership roles over the course of 8 years at the school. In addition to her time at Malvern, King has taught at Minshew and Webb, serving first through fifth grade and gifted and talented students. During her time in the classroom, she has twice been chosen as a Campus Teacher of the Year—in 2013 at Malvern and in 2017 at Minshew.

While the role of campus principal is a new step for King, she is not a stranger to Valley Creek. Between 2018–2020, she served as an instructional coach at the school, as well as at Glen Oaks and Finch.

“Ebonee has already been in a leadership role as an instructional coach at Valley Creek, so in a way, this will be like going home for her,” said Woodard. “She has already built and established many relationships at Valley Creek with the teachers and staff, and she has a community who know her and know the great work that she’s done.”

During her time in MISD, King has contributed her expertise to MISD math, science and ELAR curriculum writing teams and has served as a presenter during professional development. She has been a member of several district initiatives, including chairing the MISD Equity and Diversity Committee.

“It is truly a blessing and honor to have the opportunity to lead a school with such amazing students, a staff that goes above and beyond and such a supportive parent community,” said King. “I have a passion for building strong relationships; focusing decisions on the social/emotional, cultural and academic needs of all students; and working to keep a healthy school environment where teachers, parents and students work together to create a safe space for all. My desire is to continue the great things happening at Valley Creek.”

King earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from San Diego Christian College, her master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon University and a doctorate in education with an emphasis on organizational leadership from Grand Canyon University.
