Advanced Placement Information in MISD
McKinney ISD offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses on the high school level. The primary goal of the AP Program is to enrich the secondary school experience of students ready to apply themselves to college-level courses. AP courses are rigorous, college level courses that align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the College Board standards and skills. The College Board indicates that AP high school courses help students qualify for scholarships, improve skills necessary for college level work, and effectively compete in the college admissions process. AP participation promotes college readiness both in academics and maturity.
Successful completion of AP courses includes writing internationally recognized exams which in turn results in potential credits for 1st-year university courses at many colleges and universities around the world. AP is considered a global standard for academic excellence. AP courses and exam grades are used in the admission process in more than 3,800 universities and colleges in 115 different countries.
In McKinney ISD, we offer 32 AP courses that span all subject areas. Students may earn college credit by taking the AP exam in May and scoring a 3 or higher.
Equity & Access
McKinney ISD and College Board are committed to the principle of providing equity and access for all students to take rigorous coursework. All AP courses, as well as Advanced courses, are open enrollment. We encourage all students who are interested in an AP course subject and are willing to accept the challenge of rigorous coursework to enroll in an AP course.
McKinney ISD has an open enrollment policy for the Advanced Placement program. We believe that all students deserve an opportunity to participate in rigorous and academically challenging courses and programs. All students who are willing to accept the challenge of a rigorous academic curriculum should consider enrollment for admission to AP and Advanced courses.
