Middle School Zone Exemption

At their regular monthly meeting on February 24, the MISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the 2015 Middle School Zoning Map. The map was developed based upon an analysis of enrollment projections, specific MISD zoning criteria, parent feedback and Board dialogue. The boundary adjustment process was guided by several key principles: Move the fewest number of students possible, relieve crowding at Cockrill Middle School and Evans Middle School, maximize capacity and resources at Dowell Middle School and Faubion Middle School, maintain the Board’s ongoing commitment to socio-economic diversity throughout the district and provide room for growth at Scott Johnson Middle School.

The approved boundary adjustment plan (see map) accomplishes those goals and requires no additional bus routes.

The district will follow the following zone exemption policy for middle school students who are now affected by the approved boundary adjustments: Current 6th and 7th graders would be allowed to remain at their current campus, and younger siblings of those 6th and 7th graders would also qualify to attend under zone exemption as long as there is no break in the family attendance chain.

For example, a current Cockrill 7th grader who has been affected by boundary adjustments would be eligible through zone exemption to stay at Cockrill in 2015-2016, and his or her current 5th grade sibling who would move up to 6th grade in 2015-2016 would also be able to attend Cockrill because both the older and the younger sibling would be at Cockrill at the same time in 2015-2016. The family attendance chain is unbroken. However, a current Cockrill 8th grader who will move on to high school next year would not make his or her current 5th grade sibling eligible to attend Cockrill in 2015-2016 because the current 8th grader would no longer be at that school and the family chain of attendance would be broken.

No transportation will be provided for those who take advantage of zone exemption.
