‘B’ for Boisterous: Community Teams Compete in McKinney Education Foundation’s Spelling Bee for Scholarships

‘B’ for Boisterous: Community Teams Compete in McKinney Education Foundation’s Spelling Bee for Scholarships

McKinney, Texas – Watching a typical Spelling Bee is about as exciting as watching paint dry, but last Thursday, Emcee Colin Wells (the host of McKinney Education Television) did a fabulous job of setting the tone for the event which was energetic, to say the least. Supporters dressed up in team colors and costumes; “clapped” their MEF clappers and cheered on their team’s spellers in rowdy fashion.  As the first team used a mulligan to pass a difficult word on to another team, it was made apparent that the idea of a nice ‘friendly competition’ had been thrown out onto the Eldorado Country Club Golf green.

All the teams put up a great fight, but it was the Radical Reciters (sponsored by Raytheon and whose fans won the Spirit Stick) and the Mathsters of the Universe team (sponsored by Parker Mathematics Consulting) who were neck-and-neck up until the bitter end. Ultimately, Mathsters of the Universe (Phil Parker, Pastor Tommy Brumett, Mark David) prevailed, but Raytheon is already talking about a re-match in 2012.

After the Bee, MEF Executive Director, Melanie Perkins observed, “What an exciting way to raise money for MEF! In its first year back, it looks like our Bee for Scholarships will bring in close to $14,000. We are so grateful to our sponsors and everyone who participated; we can’t wait to do it again next year!”

Additional participating teams: McKinney Council Literates sponsored by City of McKinney; McKinney Fire Department sponsored by First United Bank/Minnis Family Endowment; McKinney Chamber Wired Wordsmiths sponsored by Encore Wire; I Bee Spellers sponsored by Independent Bank; The LitiGators sponsored by Gay, McCall, Isaacks, Gordon & Roberts, P.C.; A+ Orthographers sponsored by Academics Plus; Sunrise Rotary Flag Waver Spellers sponsored by Sunrise Rotary ; The Defending Champs sponsored by Samaritan Inn; Sperry Spellers sponsored by Neil Sperry’s Gardens Magazine; Cool Cats in the Hats (with their Eyes on the Prize) sponsored by Heritage Eye Center. Standard and Poor's States Structural Changes Needed to Fix School Finance, Cause of State's Financial Issues

Standard and Poor|Q|s States Structural Changes Needed to Fix School Finance, Cause of State|Q|s Financial Issues

"In fact, we believe that the primary source of the state's budget imbalance is not slower revenue growth, but rather, built-in budget imbalances that simply become more evident during periods of economic decline or slow revenue growth. Chief among these potential sources of persistent imbalances is education funding. As we have said for the past four years, the school finance reforms that the legislature approved in 2006 created a long-term source of budget pressure for the state, in our opinion."
