Information regarding the a la carte program -

School Nutrition designed the menu (located online) to help students/parents understand the National School Lunch Program in MISD. The students may select any entrée from the menu and up to four additional items (including milk) for the established $1.85 (elementary) and $2.00 (secondary) meal.

A student may be told by the cashiers that it would be "cheaper" for them to select another side item due to the fact that students are encouraged to have one reimbursable entrée as well as a minimum of two side items (total of 3 items) on the National School Lunch Program. If a student was to select a hamburger and milk the total a la carte price would be ($1.75 + $0.40) $2.15 a la carte. The cashier will then encourage the student to select at least one more additional reimbursable side item to establish a reimbursable meal. School Nutrition employees are required by USDA to encourage students to receive a reimbursable meal. That same student could have a hamburger, burger salad, green beans, fresh apple and a carton of milk for $2.00 (one entrée plus 3 other items and milk) and the meal would be reimbursable. This is where the meal would be "cheaper" since the student could receive a full meal for $2.00 rather than a hamburger and milk for a la carte.

MISD School Nutrition has an average of three lines running at each of the middle schools and 4 lines at each high school. The lines are set up to where any student can create a reimbursable meal on many different lines rather than have one line for reimbursable and other lines for a la carte items. Since the lines are mixed (reimbursable plus a la carte) the students need to follow the menu if they wish to only spend $2.00 for lunch. We (MISD) have chosen to use the mixed line concept to help with the high volume of students during lunch and to speed the service at the middle school level.

All parents can monitor their student's lunch accounts online as well as place a flag on the account if they wish to restrict certain types of purchases.
