Judy Poe has been a resident of
McKinney for eight years. She is married to Jon Poe, a
McKinney native, and the couple have three children. The
oldest, Jon Wayne, nine, is in 3rd grade at Burks Elementary
School and Blake, seven, is in the first grade, also at
Burks. The family's youngest daughter, Kate, five, will
begin kindergarten at Burks in the fall of 2007. All three
children will have attended the same elementary school as
their father.
Ms. Poe has served as PTO
president for two consecutive years at Burks Elementary and
recently completed participation in the McKinney Community
Action Network (CAN). In addition, she has served on a
rezoning committee for the district. She is an active member
of First Baptist Church and has served as
co-coordinator of Mother’s of Preschoolers, (MOPS), a
ministry for mothers of preschoolers whether they are stay
at home moms, working moms or teen moms.
"Working with students and teachers at Burks Elementary over
the past four years has been a privilege", Poe said. "I have
seen first hand the difference a teacher makes in the life
of a student. I remember the year my son started
kindergarten and the students in his class were at different
learning levels. Some students were reading while others
were learning letters and sounds. It was amazing to see how
each one made progress by the end of the year and all were
ready for the next grade."
Ms. Poe was born and reared in
Terrell, Texas and graduated from Terrell High School in
1987. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and
a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Baylor
University.
"It was evident growing up how important education was to
both of my parents," Ms. Poe recalled. "My mother served for
17 years on the school board in Terrell and their ultimate
educational goal for me was to graduate with a college
degree. I feel the same way with my three children and want
them to have a positive educational experience and be
completely equipped for college once they graduate high
school."
Ms. Poe has worked as a licensed
speech therapist in a variety of environments including long
term care, hospitals, home health and public schools. She
worked as a contract speech therapist at Slaughter
Elementary School in McKinney ISD as well as an office
manager in her husband’s local physical therapy clinic.
