MISD Strategic Planning Process
Over the next few months, McKinney ISD will be engaged in an exciting Strategic Planning process - a course of action moving the McKinney schools toward the next phase of planning.
A 30-member committee of parents, teachers, administrators, auxiliary staff, and members of the business community has been put in place to draft the Strategic Plan. This plan will include beliefs, a mission objective, and strategies. Specific action plans will follow, designed to achieve the strategies identified in the Strategic Plan. The finalized plan will ultimately be presented to the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Trustees for approval.
We need your help? Action teams are being sought to develop the specific action plans, formed for each strategy. Each team will reflect a cross-section of the school system and the community. "Take Charge of Education" Program
The Target Store in McKinney recently donated over $800 to MHS through the "Take Charge of Education" program. When shoppers sign up and designate MHS as the receiving school, Target donates up to 1% of every purchase made with the REDcard (Target Visa Credit Card, Target Credit Card, or Target Check Card) to MHS. We receive two checks each year through this program that go directly into the student activity fund. MHS thanks you for your support!
MHS: Pride on Display (new)
Senior members of the National Honor Society spent the morning of Saturday, November 15, cleaning up the outside of our campus. They picked up trash and debris on the parking lots and all around the building and made the campus look much better. We really appreciate their pride in our school and their willingness to serve in this manner.
Shane Haga of the MHS Cycling Club competed this weekend in the Ultracentric Endurance Race at Erwin Park. Shane won his age group in the 6 hour mountain bike endurance event, even lapping the field. Congratulations Shane!!!
The Lion 2008 (MHS Yearbook) won 1st place best of show for the third national convention in a row. In addition, individual staff members won ratings of superior, excellent and honorable mention for work on site. Thor Lund was the only person of 121 in yearbook sports writing to receive the top nod as superior. Anna Jay won excellent for student life photography and Emily Judd won honorable mention for photo story.
MHS is pleased to recognize 9 students selected for commendation by the College Board for their performance on the 2007 PSAT. Honored as National Merit Semifinalists are Jerod Coker, William Johnson, and Justin Montgomery. National Commended Students are Beau Brehm, Jason Couture, and Ruth Stoner. National Hispanic Recognition goes to Emily Judd, Reid Garcia, and Alexandra Thorne.
MHS FFA competed at the District 5 FFA Leadership Development Events (LDE) on Saturday, November 15, against over 400 FFA members from 35 school districts in Denton and Collin Counties. The FFA Radio Broadcasting team of Jeni Swim, Katelyn Moore and Alex Neyrey placed 12th out of 20. The Junior Chapter Conducting team of Alex Neyrey (President), Keli Jo Cummings (Vice-President), Courtney Jeffries (Secretary), Taylor Lewis (Student Advisor), Domonick Lane (Treasurer), Meredith Houston (Reporter) and Taylor Carter (Sentinel) placed 3rd. The Junior FFA Quiz team of Alex Neyrey, Taylor Carter, Domonick Lane and Meredith Houston placed 1st out of 17. The Junior FFA Quiz qualified for the Area 5 FFA Leadership Finals scheduled for Saturday, November 22, at Crowley High School.
MHS Varsity and JV Wrestlers competed at Arlington High School on Nov. 15. Will Kemp (Varsity) brought home a Bronze Medal. Dillon Renner and Jacob Judd also brought home Bronze Medals in the JV division.
On November 15, Freshman Meghan Shea represented MHS at the State Cross Country Meet in Round Rock placing 17th overall as an individual. Meghan ran a great race and finished an outstanding season!
After sweeping a meet against Denton ISD high schools on November 13, the MHS Swim Team took to the water again, competing in a 28 team meet on November 14-15. The girls brought home the 3rd place trophy and the boys finished in 4th place. The athletes also brought home a lot of individual medals.
In Girls Basketball, the Varsity took second place in the Corsicana Tournament. The squad played six games in three days. In spite of this exhausting schedule, they took the floor and remained competitive throughout! All eight players were huge contributors in the success of the team.
A few months ago, NSPA (The National Scholastic Press Association) announced six finalists for it's annual Pacemaker award. The MHS1 Broadcasting Team was one of those six finalists (the only one from Texas). On November 15 at the national convention in St. Louis, MHS1 and two other finalists were named Pacemaker winners. This is the first Pacemaker award for MHS. But there's more. MHS also placed second in the Best of Show competition and won more individual awards than ever before. Billy Hagee and Chad Taylor received an Honorable Mention for In-Camera Video Feature. Laura Bailey received an award of Excellence for Broadcast newswriting. Hayden Jackson received a Superior rating for Video Feature Story and Brennan Lane received a Superior rating for Videography - the only superior rating in that contest!
MHS FFA members placed second at the Tarleton State University Leadership Development Events (LDE) on November 3. There were over 1,500 FFA members from 52 school districts represented from the surrounding area.
The Junior Chapter Conducting team of Alex Neyrey (President), Tyler Baumgardner (Vice President), Keli Jo Cummings (Secretary), Taylor Lewis (Student Advisor), Domonick Lane (Treasurer), Meredith Houston (Reporter) and Taylor Carter (Sentinel) placed 2nd out of 19. The FFA Radio Broadcasting team of Jeni Swim, Katelyn Moore and Alex Neyrey placed 2nd out of 31. Other MHS FFA leadership teams competed as well and placed respectfully at TSU.
Home Access Center
The MISD Home Access Center is now active. The Home Access Center provides parents and students with access to grade, attendance, and other information via the internet. A user name and password (new for 08-09) is reguired to enter the website. To obtain your user name and new password for the 08-09 school year, please contact your child's house principal's office.

Volunteering in MISD Schools
This reminder that anyone wishing to volunteer in any MISD school must apply annually via the MISD Website. Applicants must also indicate which campus they wish to serve. Volunteers approved for last school year must re-apply before September 30 to maintain their volunteer status for the 08-09 school year.
