MISD Academics
The McKinney Independent School District
rates as one of the fastest growing school districts in North Texas
and continues to receive academic commendations for the performance
of its students.
McKinney ISD students continue to excel academically. Seven schools
in the district were rated “Exemplary” in the Texas Education
Agency’s (TEA) rating system based on the 2004 Texas Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test results. Eight of the schools in
the district received a “Recognized” rating based on the test
results. All three middle schools that completed the TAKS test in
2004 were rated “Recognized”, a first for the district since the TEA
began the rating system.
Schools receiving an “Exemplary” rating by the TEA were C.T. Eddins
Elementary, Reuben Johnson Elementary, Arthur McNeil Elementary,
Valley Creek Elementary, Roy Lee Walker Elementary, Earl and Lottie
Wolford Elementary and the ACT Academy. “Recognized” schools in the
district include Mildred Bennett Elementary, Nell Burks Elementary,
Glen Oaks Elementary, Jose and Maria Vega Elementary, J.W. Webb
Elementary, Ruth Dowell Middle School, Jack Faubion Middle School
and Scott Johnson Middle School.
In addition to high overall ratings, a large number of McKinney
students also received “Commended Performance” recognition from the
TEA. In comparison to other school districts in the North Texas
area, McKinney ISD students were ranked in the top percentages for
“Commended Performance” in 2004.
Valley Creek Elementary, one
of the district’s “Exemplary” schools, was named a “No Child Left
Behind Blue Ribbon Winner” by the U.S. Department of Education in
2003. It was one of only 214 schools nationwide to be honored and
the only school in Collin County to be recognized.
McKinney ISD high school students also score high on national tests
each year. High school students from MISD taking the SAT test in
2004 had higher test averages than both the state and national
averages. McKinney High School students averaged a score of 520 in
the verbal portion of the SAT and 524 in the math portion for a
total average score of 1,044. McKinney North students scored an
average of 512 in verbal and 521 in math for a total average score
of 1,033. The state averages for the SAT test were 493 in verbal and
499 in math for an overall average of 992 and the national averages
in verbal were 508 and 518 in math for an overall average of 1,026.
