McKinney Learning Center Counselor Rebecca Oaxaca received a grant several years ago to purchase 15 sewing machines, fabric, and supplies for an after-school sewing club. She started a sewing club at Finch Elementary teaching her students how to fill the “boredom gap” and to “find their passion". She also uses the machines for Family Learning Nights so parents and their children can learn sewing skills together.
“I have always had a passion for sewing, even as a young child," says Oaxaca. "My mother and grandmother were seamstresses and enjoyed making their own clothing. My ability to sew has sure come in handy...especially for my wedding 20 years ago!”
"I am Rebecca Oaxaca and I play at work!"
