PRINCIPAL'S PAGE
Hello! My name is Juli Ferraro, Principal of Serenity High. A community task force spent many hours researching the concept of a sober high school, beginning in early 1998. As a culmination of those efforts, and with the support of the Superintendent and the School Board, the dream became a reality in October, 1999. Input for the name of the school, as well as ideas for meeting student needs surfaced from conversations with students in recovery. During the first two months of the 1999-2000 school year, a team of four molded and formed Serenity High. A mission statement, goals, policies and procedures were carefully developed to provide a framework for Serenity. Not only did the staff want a safe haven for students to earn a high school diploma, additional accommodations were made to include daily counseling and community building sessions.
A true partnership has been created between the parents of our students and staff. Parental support is vital as a student strives to graduate from high school while maintaining sobriety.
I have been associated with MISD in various capacities since 1988. My first assignment was teaching French at McKinney High School. I joined the Counseling department as freshman class counselor and served as the At-Risk counselor for both McKinney High School and the LINC Center. Previous to this school year, I was the administrator for the LINC Center and SOAR 2000, MISD's alternative education campuses. Recognizing the need to create a school for students in recovery has been one of the most exciting challenges in my career as an educator. Speaking not only for myself, but also for our "team", what greater sense of accomplishment can there be than to guide a student along the road to recovery and graduation?
