McKinney ISD Teachers of the Year Announced

Wilmeth Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Geneva "Genny" Gimber was named the McKinney ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year and Steve Garms, the choir director at McKinney High School was named the district's Secondary Teacher of the Year at the McKinney Chamber of Commerce's Community Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 25.

Geneva "Genny" Gimber

Ms. Gimber has been a kindergarten teacher at Wilmeth Elementary School for the past three years and has more than 15 years of teaching experience. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Louisiana State University and her Alternative Certification in lower elementary grades from Louisiana Tech University. Ms. Gimber also received her kindergarten certification from Louisiana State University.

"I enjoy developing relationships with my students—learning what makes them tick; their passions and fears," Ms. Gimber said. "By doing this, I learn about the whole child and am able to meet their academic and social needs. I affectionately call all my students--for the last 15 years--Mrs. Gimber’s “Friends”. When I take the time to develop the relationship, my students not only feel loved and respected, but also strive to meet all my expectations. I get so excited when my students figure out they can do something—like read. They are truly little sponges waiting to be filled."

Steve Garms has been a teacher for 28 years. He has taught in McKinney ISD for the past 13 years. Mr. Garms received his Bachelor of Music Education degree and his Master of Arts degree in Choral Music from West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M University.
